Pigs in a Blanket
Martha shows football fans Jason Hermes and Dan Gosh-Roy how to prepare a classic football snack: pigs in a blanket.
Cut hot dogs lengthwise 3/4 of the way through. Insert a piece of cheese or 1/2 teaspoon caramelized onions into each hot dog, if using; set aside. If not using cheese or onions, poke hot dogs several times with the tip of a knife.
On a lightly floured work surface, working with one sheet of puff pastry at a time, roll into a 14-by-11-inch rectangle. Cut lengthwise into seven 1 1/2-inch wide strips. Cut each strip crosswise into 4 rectangles, each about 3 1/2 inches long.
In a small bowl, beat together egg and 1 tablespoon water; set aside. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a nonstick baking mat; set aside. Place a hot dog on the narrow end of one piece of pastry. Roll to enclose, brushing with some of the beaten egg to adhere; transfer to prepared baking sheet. Repeat process with remaining hot dogs and pastry. Brush the tops of puff pastry with egg and sprinkle with seeds, if using. Transfer to refrigerator and let chill for 15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Transfer baking sheets to oven and bake until puffed and golden, about 20 minutes. Let cool briefly before serving with mustard and ketchup.
sooooo good.

Nutritious and Delicious!
These are SO. GOOD. I live close to a shop that sells freshly-made cocktail hot dogs, and that made them all the more delicious. Everyone loved them

such an easy snack to make for a crowd, and such a great deal. i made about 50 for less than $15 and it didn't take that long. used hebrew national cocktail hot dogs and pepperidge farm puff pastry. much better than pillsbury crescent dough. the egg wash makes the piggies golden brown before they burn. i made these the nite before, refrigerated them for about 30 min and then froze them overnite. put them directly in the oven frozen.
gonna try one..
awesome!! great with the puff pastry instead of Pilsbury dough because they are crispy. I tried them with chedder cheese topped with sesame seeds, delicious! Careful, they are addictive :)
I found the mini cocktail hot dogs in bulk at Costco. I open the package and repackage them in smaller, freezer bags and freeze what I don't need for the pigs in a blanket.
I made a version of these for super bowl sunday and everyone loved them! I will say I had a bit of trouble with the ingredients- what little were actually needed. I could not find puff pastry at the grocery and did not have time to do homemade so I copped out with crescent roll dough that I rolled out and cut- the other thing I had to work with was I was unable to find mini dogs so I bought the Nathans that are bigger than the bun and cut in half. Not quite as cute- but it worked.
super bowl show
