Grilled Ham and Cheese with Pears

Pears come in more than 5,000 varieties. Choose ones that are firm, without blemishes and with stems attached. The pears at the supermarket have often spent a few months in cool storage, so they are usually a few days from being fully ripe.

Grilled Ham and Cheese with Pears

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 8 ounces Gruyere cheese
  • 1 pear, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces deli ham, thinly sliced
  • Butter


  1. Layer 4 slices of sandwich bread with 8 ounces Gruyere or other melting cheese, 1 thinly sliced pear, and 8 ounces thinly sliced deli ham; top each with bread.

  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Spread outside of both bread slices with butter. Cook sandwiches in batches, if necessary, until golden and cheese is melted, flipping once, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Cut sandwiches in half and serve hot.

    This was really easy to make and I liked it but my boys did not eat it. So I only rated it 3 stars. I'd make it again for myself but will have to skip this one for the kids next time. :o(

    I loved the combination of salty, sweet, creamy, and crunchy all in one bite. The grocer did not have gruyere so I substituted a good quality 4 yr aged cheddar, and a nice quality asiago bread from the baker. Will be interested to try again with the gruyere. When I make several grilled cheese like this, I use the oven...heat to broil, the key is heating the baking sheet before you put the sandwiches on, grill, flip, grill. The cheese that oozes out make s a crispy crust and less butter needed :)

    I love rye bread or pumpernickle,
    also use mayonnaise instead of butter ,sounds silly but lends a nice golden color to the bread.

    This was so easy to make and absolutely the best grilled ham and cheese with the pear on it. Only thing is I had to wait for the pear to ripen. I didn't cook the pear and it turned out even better.

    i have done this but in England we toast them under a grill first time i used a frying pan and butter no wounder Elvis loved grilled sandwiches these are to die for

    I made these as a lazy dinner for my family, they went over a treat. I cooked the pear in melted butter as Martha did on the show. YUMMY
