Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

Pull a fast one on the kids: In just 10 minutes, whip up the dough for these sweet, crunchy treats made with whole-wheat flour. Many recipes for baked goods can be tweaked to use equal parts whole-wheat and all-purpose flours, without losing flavor or texture.

Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

  • 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup packed dark-brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk together flours and baking powder; set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together oil, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Add flour mixture, and stir to combine; mix in oats and currants.

  3. Using two tablespoons of dough per cookie, roll into balls; place on two baking sheets lined with parchment paper, 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake until lightly browned, 15 to 17 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through.

  4. Cool 5 minutes on sheets, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Cook's Note

Store in an airtight container at room temperature, up to 5 days.

    I didn't have ww flour so added about 1/4 cup bran to 3/4 white, with a few Tablespoons of processed flax (to fill up the 1 cup measurement. I also added 1/4 cup peanut butter and 1/3 cup peanut butter chips and 1/4 tsp. salt. I only had quick cooking oatmeal so used that, lightly oiled a baking sheet and they baked perfectly at 350 for 12 minutes. They are delicious warm but don't know if they will last so I can taste them cooled off!! haha :) Cream that oil, sugar and egg well, until fluffy!

    Added 1/4 c raw wheat germ and 1/2 c milk chocolate morsels and they came out great! Yum!

    Great! I love these cookies. I changed the recipe a bit though. I only used whole wheat flour and I threw in cinnamon chips. Delicious.

    I omitted the all-purpose flour in this recipe because my mother doesn't like it, and raisins because no one likes them (oops!), and so I made instead plain oatmeal cookies.... they turned out MARVELOUS! My dad, a diabetic, insisted on having two at once (!!!), and my mother was a fan of how wonderful their texture was. Definitely recommend!

    I make this cookies every week! They are great for a mid morning/afternoon snack. I always replace sugar or brown sugar with panela (unrefined whole cane sugar) and instead of only raisins I add a whole cup of a nut mix (made by me) with caj├║, sunflower seeds, quinoa (boiled first around 20 minutes), raisins, chestnuts or sesame seeds. It's like a natural homemade energy bar (my nutritionist totally approves this recipe) because it's also made with only whole wheat. Hope you have some fun! :)

    Yummy! I used applesauce instead of the oil and used dark chocolate chips instead of raisins. Awesome recipe that can be tweaked quite easily depending on your family's tastebuds!

    Made this recipe today. I used whole wheat flour only. Added a dash of milk ,cinnamon and used olive oil. Also , I used desiccated coconut. Amazing soft cookies !! The cookies are almost done. Have to make another batch tomorrow.

    These babies came out delicious. I added a qtr cup of walnuts for added texture. Not to be a Dougy Downer, but are there sny nutritional specs available (my bride is counting calories)?

    Oh, I almost forgot in addition to adding a pinch of salt and a quick dash of milk I also used Olivr Oil in my cookies in the second batch... they were much better that way.

    I made this recipe as shown with a few fun multi-colored sprinkles in the batter and then again adding 1/16th of salt and a dash of milk. Both times they came out great!! I'll have to try this for the next bake sale :)

    These have a definite "healthy" taste. My husband can't stand it, I can tolerate (knowing it's healthy!), and my 1 yo will get some whole grain and doesn't know the difference yet! :)

    I made a few modifications. Instead of two-tbsp balls, I made them 1-tbsp using my melon-baller. Despite this change, I only got 29 cookies compared to the 18-20 promised by the recipe.

    Because of the smaller size, I baked for 9-10 min instead of 15, rotating the pan at half time as the recipe suggests.

    This tasted pretty good. I made my cookies a little bigger and baked them for 16 min and I think they could of came out of the oven sooner. If I made them the size in this recipe I think they would of burnt. If I make this recipe again I would make them small and bake them for 10 min. I also used self rising flour to replace the all-purpose flour and baking powder. Also used cinnamon chips instead of raisins. :)

    Cholesterol 10.3 mg, Sodium 35.0 mg, Potassium 89.2 mg, Total Carbohydrate 22.5 g, Dietary Fiber 1.1 g, Sugars 13.6 g, Protein 1.6 g

    This is PER cookie (if yielding 18 per batch) Not exactly what I would call HEALTHY. But it would be nice to have this show.

    BlueJay21 and I are on the same page! I don't care about nutritional values or calorie counts, as I know how to calculate both and I am not lazy or fat! If you don't exercise, then don't eat the cookies, pies, cakes or ANY desert! Frankly, I'm really tired of the food police on these sites! GAD!

    I'm always looking for a healthy way to enjoy a snack. Not only for me but my grandkids. I like to know the nutrition for many reasons. And it's an added treat if the information is provided. I would think whether you want to know or not, it's to each his own, so no need to be negative to others that would like to know. The recipe sounds good and I'll be giving it a try.

    Sounds like BlueJay21 got up on the wrong side of the nest! I think it is helpful to have nutritional values for our treats. It's not being lazy if we don't want to go onto another website to find this information, I see it as wanting to do something better with my time than looking up nutritional values. By the way, the cookie sounds great, and I'm making it for my kids, regardless of the calories!

    I am so tired of people wanting the nutrition values of cookie recipes. It is so easy to go on the web and find a site where you can get the nutritional content of any recipe. If not knowing the nutritional content of a cookie bothers you, then don't eat the cookie. Cookies are a treat, and we can all have a treat now and again. If you are making a meal out of them, then you are in trouble. Don't be so lazy and find the information for yourself.

    BOTH my girls loved this recipe! (4 & 6 yr old)
    and that almost NEVER happens. If one likes something, then usually the other doesn't, but these will be baked again in our house! Thanks for the recipe. :)

    Someone commented that adding nuts would make them less healthy because it adds more calories. Not so! Nuts are a great source of protein and they fill you up. People have this idea that calories are bad, but calories from whole natural foods are good for you! You just need to use portion control. I really liked these cookies. I used craisins too and it added a lot of flavor. I am going to try some of the other suggestions too..I think the shorter cooking time might help make them softer.

    I made these cookies following the recipe exactly as is. I used King Arthur white whole wheat flour ( an excellant brand) and these cookies baked and looked beautiful, but tasted horrible. My grown sons not knowing anything about the ingredients used could not strand their taste either. Will never make again nor recommend to others.

    Made these tonight - great recipe! Used canola oil instead of vegetable oil and chocolate chips instead of currants. The kids loved them, and they were a little healthier than the traditional chocolate chip cookie. I got 16 out of this recipe, and they were done in about 14 minutes (convection oven). I will definitely make these again!

    I've made these cookies several times and I love them! I did change things up a little. I use whole-wheat flour only, replaced the vegetable oil by apple sauce and the sugar by Splenda (you can use 6 packets as well). Love them. They fill me up!

    I liked these cookies, but they were just a touch bland. I think a little bit of salt would have helped tremendously to bring a bit more contrast to them. But overall a pretty good recipe for a relatively "healthy" cookie.

    I made these cookies, well I found 15 to 17 minutes was way too long to bake them, the first batch burned. I raised the oven rack and flattened the cookies with a fork and baked them for 12 minutes tops and they were really good. Plan on making them again.

    I will be making these with all whole wheat flour and they will be even healthier. Adding nuts is a great idea!, it adds healthy fats and protien which is NOT unhealthy by any means

    I just made these cookies following the recipe to a tee! I have a 1 tablespoon size cookie scoop and the recipe yielded 21 cookies with that. I must say I like them very much, sweet enough for me and at 83 calories each are worth making!

    Try using the "Recipe Calculator" on the internet to get the nutritional value of any Martha Stewart's receipe's. Great tool to use. These cookies are about 100 calories each.

    These are healthy cookies I calculated the caloric content of the cookies: if you make 18 each cookie has 96.6; if you make 20 each cookie has 87 calories.
    If you substitute and add chocolate chunks and Olive oil, the caloric content is obviously higher making them less healthy. Numbers I calculated with were on the package.

    I replaced the oil with butter, added 1/2 tsp of salt, and also replaced the currants with dark chocolate chunks. I did not find these cookies to be bland at all, and in fact love the added texture and flavour from the whole wheat.

    I thought this was a pretty good recipe. I did alter it slightly tho. I only used 1/4 cup of oil and added a little butter for more flavor. I also only used 1/2 cup of sugar and added craisins and dark chocolate chunks. I like my cookies to be more grainy/wheaty rather than sweet/sugary. The craisins and dark chocolate more than made up for the lack of sugar. If you don't think the recipe calls for enough sugar, add some craisins or chocolate chips, it makes a huge difference!!

    These cookies are really bland. They are easy to make but lack a nice cookie sweetness. Unless you get a raisin in your bite they don't have much flavor. I thought about putting an icing on them to salvage them but I don't think I would make them again.

    I thought these were really good. I did a few things different. I used a 1T scoop and baked them for only 12 minutes. When they came out of the oven, I used a flat glass and pressed on them slightly. They really puff up and don't spread. That helped them remain nice and soft inside. I got 2 dozen small cookies out of the recipe. They're perfect size for my 2 year old. I will definitely make these again.

    I wasn't that impressed. They're ok, but nothing to rave about. The recipe should be doubled also, it made about 18 golf ball sized cookies. When your cooking them, you should err on the side of undercooking. Over cooking them makes them hard as rocks! LOL

    I didn't have raisins, so substituted craisins and they turned out great. I was a little worried because the dough is so greasy, but the end product is yummy. I got 15 cookies out of the recipe (3 points each for WW's)

    These cookies turned out great! I made a not-so-healthy version using chocolate chips instead of currants or raisins. I also used olive oil instead of regular vegetable oil. They were fantastic! And so terribly easy! Will use this recipe again!

    Absolutely delicious! Took no time at all to make (ofcourse the Kenwood Chef does help!)
    Very 'no fuss' and healthy too. I doubled the mixture and it made up a good batch of 12 3" cookies.
    This is a recipe that I will use time and time again!

    Really tasty and much healthier than my usual chocolate chip ones! However, is it just me, or is there a typo? Even using 2 TEASPOONS of mixture this recipe only made 9 cookies... Anyone else found the same thing?

    Probably would not make again but if I did I would add some finely chopped walnuts or pecans, plus a little cinnamon. Do not overcook. These do not spread at all; I'm guessing b/c of the oil.
