Ham-and-Cheese Baguette

For a delicious lunch any day of the week, try this ham-and-cheese baguette.

  • yield: Makes 1 sandwich




  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 (9-inch) baguette, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, halved horizontally
  • 3 slices boiled ham, folded in half
  • 3 slices Jarlsberg cheese, folded in half


  1. Step 1

    Butter cut sides of baguette. On one half, layer ham and cheese. Sandwich with remaining half and serve.

    Seriously? That's it? Cheese, ham and bread? While I admit it's a naturally tasty combination, seeing such a basic, unfooled with 'recipe' from MS seems odd. Gruyere, iberico or Serrano ham would also work well (not partial to Jarlsberg) and even a splash of rustic mustard would make this more 'Martha stewart-ish' imho.

    Do you want to make it even more yummy? For this recipe I prefer Iberico ham, you might find it also as jamon iberico. I know it is expensive but the trick is to buy the foreleg called shoulder or paleta rather than the ham (backleg). Paleta or shoulder is much cheaper and for sandwiches, pittas, rolls and ?
