Chocolate Oatmeal Raisin Cookies


If you prefer a crispier texture, bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 16 to 20 minutes.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups raisins
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside. With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

  2. Add eggs and vanilla; beat until combined, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Add flour mixture; beat until just combined. Add oats, raisins, and chocolate chips; beat until just combined.

  3. Drop 32 heaping tablespoons of batter, about 1 1/2 inches apart, onto baking sheets. Bake, rotating sheets halfway through, until cookies have spread and are golden brown and soft to the touch, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool 5 minutes on sheets; transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

    Made these last night, but I made a few changes. Instead of raisins I used craisins and instead of milk chocolate chips I used white chocolate chips. Very good recipe!!!

    These are delicious! I made it with 1 cup of cranberries, and half a cup of raisins to add a little tartness and everyone that has tasted them has absolutely loved them. Perfect balance!

    Delish! Moist, yummy goodness. Not generally a fan of oatmeal raisin cookies but these are fantastic! You must make these..I definitely will do it again.

    My Grandmother used to make, what she called, 'Cowboy' cookies. I used Martha's recipe to try and reproduce Grandmother's perfect family cookie. I reduced the oats to two cups, added one cup of walnuts and on top of the cookies I baked chopped maraschino cherries. This is the closest to Grandmother's cookies as I have gotten in ten years, soft in the middle, crispy on the edges and perfectly fluffy. Another excellent recipe from

    The cookies were delicious! Everyone loved them, and they turned out perfectly. I made no changes to the recipe, though I had to bake them a bit longer.

    Have been making this cookie since it first appeared. Has replaced my previous best cookie recipe. No changes. The perfect quick cookie to make and bring and enjoy at home!!

    Easy and very yummy. I added 1/2 cup granulated sugar instead of the recommended amount, and only 1/2 cup of raisins and only 1 cup chocolate chips. The cookies was sweet enough. Will make again. :)

    I've been making this recipe since it was published - it has to be the family favorite for chocolate chip cookies - so much that I've lost the book a couple of times and have to come here to reprint the recipe. I do add some peanut butter to mine and replace the raisins with walnuts but otherwise it is a keeper in my book and always gets rave reviews. Such a treat :)
