Spicy-Sweet Chicken Wings

These wings have a citrus flavor that's slightly sweet with some heat.

Spicy-Sweet Chicken Wings

Ingredients

FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE

  • 2 teaspoons safflower oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (from about 2 oranges)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Sliced scallions, for garnish

FOR THE WINGS

  • 2/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup Sriracha hot-chile sauce, or other hot sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon toasted-sesame oil
  • 4 1/2 pounds chicken wing drumettes, patted dry with paper towels (35 to 45 wings)

Directions

  1. Make the wings: Whisk hoisin, orange zest, hot sauce, honey, and sesame oil in a large bowl. Refrigerate 1/2 cup marinade. Add wings to remaining marinade, and toss to coat. Cover, and refrigerate, tossing wings occasionally, for at least 2 hours (or overnight).

  2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Let wings stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Arrange on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake for 20 minutes, rotating sheet and brushing with half of reserved marinade halfway through. Increase oven temperature to 425 degrees. Bake wings, brushing with remaining marinade, until golden brown, about 20 minutes more.

  3. Make the dipping sauce: Heat safflower oil and garlic in a small saucepan over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add orange juice, honey, hoisin, and salt, and cook for 2 minutes. Let cool.

  4. Arrange wings on platter, sprinkle with scallions, and serve with sauce.

    I did not care for these at all. I thought the sweet and spicy both were too subtle. The spice level was ok, but the spice flavor wasn't very interesting. The wings didn't get at all crispy--not sure if they were supposed to or not, but either way the skin was just flabby and soggy. My husband thought they weren't bad (not exactly great but ok) and he's the bigger chicken wing fan, so it's a mixed review from me!

    The recipe was really easy to make. I made if for game today and everyone liked them. But the 1/4 cup of siracha hot sauce just wasn't enough, so if you like spicy, add 1/2 cup. And i would cook the wings at 450 degrees for the last 20 minutes instead. It'll make them crispier! Enjoy!

    I didn't think this was spicy, but 2 of my guests did. In any case, it was a hit, and perfect to leave out for the guys watching a sports game. I will definitely make again. I used regular drumsticks instead of wings.

    I made this and found that it wasn't too spicy, but I like a lot of spice, so that may not apply to everyone. However, I found that it was kind of bland otherwise, and was a little dissapointed with overall flavor. I wouldn't make again, probably.

    Great recipe. Have always been a fan of orange chicken. Agree that sauce is not needed. They are spicy. There is a definite orange taste. Now my favorite wings.

    I made these for Super Bowl and they were delicicious. We marinated for a full 24 hours and followed the baking time to a tee. We didn't use the sauce because there was no need for it. The wings stood on their own. The only thing I would do differently is add less orange zest. I felt it was a bit too citrusy.

    We made these for Superbowl and they came out GREAT! Both the wings and the sauce (I did simmer it for 10 mins, not 2) Not too hot at all, but we all have different palates.... Also, I watched the wings carefully. There was a point where they went from barely done to almost overcooked very quickly. Try them again.... I will.

    I made these wings for a Super Bowl Party. They travelled well, since they cool and are good served at room temp. I made the sauce also, but no one used it. I did add time to the oven cooking time, until they were nice and brown, watching them closely and basting a few times. They were a big hit!

    I made this recipe for Super Bowl Game. Wings are very tasty and moist. I only used 1 teaspoon of the orange zest. Wings were not hot to me but for hubby a little hot. So, next time I will only use a 1/4 cup of the hot sauce. Made the dipping sauce but we didn't even use it. Wings do not need the dipping sauce. Marinated for 24 hours. Will make them again and again. Yummy!

    made these for a superbowl party and they were a hit. used just 1/4 cup of the sriracha sauce and they were pretty spicy (but good, though this was a crowd that really liked spicy food). cut the cooking time to about 12 min total and marinated overnite. didn't make the dipping sauce but the wings were good without it. a nice variation on traditional buffalo wings.

    Made recipe for Super Bowl Game, used drumsticks and halved the marinade using 1/4 cup of chili sauce, equal to 1/2 cup in full recipe. Marinated 24 hours and made the dipping sauce at same time. Dipping sauce is a must, other reviewers said had a strong garlic flavor; you did not cook garlic long enough. Cook garlic in oil long enough to release the raw garlic smell, before it turns brown. Would make this again w/dipping sauce again, full -use 1/4 cup chili sauce, 1/2 cup too spicy.

    I used a toaster oven, basted and flipped them after 10 minutes at 375, cooked for another 10 minutes, then cranked up the heat to 425 and cooked for another 20. They turned out very moist. Spicy, but not too spicy, and I don't eat spicy food often. I used a bit more hot sauce then recommended. Will make again!

    I made these today and was very disappointed - I just put 1/4 cup of the hot sauce in and it was VERY hot - and I didn't find anything sweet about this. Also, two 20 min. sessions of cooking is too long and the only thing I could taste in the dipping sauce was "garlic". If you like spicy, HOT, and overcooked chicken, then you'll love this recipe. It was a waste of time and effort in my opinion.
