How to Keep Matching Sheets Together in the Closet

Martha Stewart Living, January 2011

Don't let your matching sheets get lost in the linen closet. Use this simple trick: Tuck the sheet set inside one of its pillowcases, and then stack according to size (twin, full, queen, king) or by the room you use the sheets in (master bedroom, guest room.)

This is a SUPERB idea! It's so useful especially for me, staying in an extended family, with young children in the household.

The pillow cases do not look like they are open to their full width. They almost look like they might be folded over underneath ...I wish they would give a picture tutorial for how they folded the sheets to what width to make them look so skinny. I know how to do the fitted sheet tutorial, it would be nice to have a flat sheet tutorial to make this idea a success.

I never fold sheets -- I wash them, dry them and put them back on the bed. I don't see the point in buying an extra set of sheets for beds. (Plus then, you don't have loads of sheets/bedding that need to be washed.)

I have been doing this too and fold them a lot smaller, but it doesn't look like Martha's sheets here. She is the best.

  • TeamCousins 4 Feb, 2011

I tuck the pillow case ends in, and that holds the sheets in pretty tidy,

  • d_carbone 4 Feb, 2011

Fold the sheets just slightly smaller than the actual pillow case and slide them in. Fitted sheets fold best if you ignore the gathers and treat the sheet as if it folds from the top of the fitted portion as you would the flat sheet.

I use this trick, but am unable to make in look as neat as it is in the picture. Any tips?

  • LizaRaiser 3 Feb, 2011

This is a brilliant idea! I'm going to do it. Thanks!

  • maddie123 3 Feb, 2011

Looks nice, however, I have the toughest time folding the fitted sheet.....help!

  • rita428 3 Feb, 2011

    so simple!
why wouldn't I have thought of that. I am immediately reorg-ing my linen closet. Thanks

  • RosieOboy 3 Feb, 2011

I have always folded my top and bottom sheets together, but never thought to put them inside the pillowcase what a cute idea Thanks Martha

After I read this suggestion for storing sheets it came to mind that there are drawers under our bed. Since I don?

  • makeshagn 3 Feb, 2011

Dinsept- Martha was on Oprah not so long ag and she showed us how to fold fitted sheets perfectly! - try to google it! (im yet to try it!)

  • CroppinSuzi 3 Feb, 2011

I've been doing this one for a while too! I love this tip. It certainly makes changing the beds a breeze and saves a lot of space in my linen closet. Love it!!

  • Nomi01 3 Feb, 2011

    Ohh brilliant!

  • jjames582 3 Feb, 2011

and I have been doing this for quite a while now and loooove how easy it is to see, the space it seems to save and how much faster finding a matching set is now!

  • jjames582 3 Feb, 2011

  • vdiane 3 Feb, 2011

Awesome idea. Great for those of us who failed fitted sheet folding 101. Yeah!!!

  • Denice1 3 Feb, 2011

This is a great idea! Why didn't I think of this!

  • loisfolla 3 Feb, 2011

Where have I been, I love this idea!

  • enlforever91 3 Feb, 2011

Ive been using this trick for years ever since I first saw Martha do it on her show a few years back. Its so simple and so much neater, I haven't misplaced any pillowcases since!

  • margethequilter 3 Feb, 2011

I have been doing this for years, mostly becaue of limited space, but also to separate the king sheets from twin, etc., and I could always grab the right sheet set and know all the pieces were thee. It just takes a little practice to fold the king bottom fittted sheet.

  • thrumyiz 3 Feb, 2011

I make sure that I launder sheets only when I'm available to transfer them to the dryer as soon as the wash cycle is complete and fold them as they come out of the dryer. They fold flat much easier when they are warm. If you use the process suggested by Martha, your sheets really will lie flat. Even my king-size sheets easily fit into a pillow case!

  • chezmom5 3 Feb, 2011

How can you fold huge king bed fitted sheets to be flat enough for this to work? Even if they're perfectly done "Martha's way," the sheer bulk is too much and they end up being terribly wrinkled from being stuffed in.

  • mountainmama1 3 Feb, 2011

mine never look this nice. I use this trick tho... I just can never get the sheets that flat no matter how I fold them.

  • momerator10 3 Feb, 2011

Great idea! I get my fitted sheets nice and flat by folding them on a table or on the bed. It's much easier than trying to do it with your hubby holding the other end of them.

  • GabbyCal 3 Feb, 2011

MamaDriggs - Hanging extra sheets in the closet in the room where they're used is a terrific idea. I have a very very small linen closet in relation to my sheet/towel collection so will take this tip and put it to good use.

  • mahowells 3 Feb, 2011

Great idea looks great but like the others how do you fold the sheets and pillow case????

  • MamaDriggs 3 Feb, 2011

I don't store sheets in the linen closet, I put them in the room where they're used. For instance, my son's extra set hangs on a hangar in his closet. That way the linen closet is used for blankets which are MUCH bulkier. I do, however, store the EXTRA sheet sets like this.

  • SweetPacino 3 Feb, 2011

great idea, but how do you fold them so they fit?

  • orangeseltzer 3 Feb, 2011

This is a great idea. I have been struggling with this. Thank you

  • happylala 3 Feb, 2011

This is nice looking...but...how do you organize mis matched sheets which I like to use! Also, what's the best way to fold different pillow cases...euro's boudoir, king, queen, etc..?

  • Dinsept 3 Feb, 2011

I love this Idea but I can never get my fitted sheets so flat!

  • tski 3 Feb, 2011

    Great tip! Thanks!
