Quilted Silk Drawstring Bag

Introduction

A silk drawstring bag with grosgrain ribbon is elegant for evening essentials. Here's one basic way to sew fabric to a backing, similar to our quilted potholders.

Materials

  • Silk satin, in Orange
  • Embroidery floss
  • Grosgrain ribbon

Steps

  1. Step 1

Place front and back fabrics, right sides together, on work surface (front fabric on the bottom); top with batting. For larger pieces, pin edges.

  2. Step 2

Using a sewing machine, sew around edges of the 3 layers with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving an opening on 1 side. Clip corners on the diagonal. Turn the piece right side out. Use a point turner or other blunt tool to push corners into shape from the inside.

  3. Step 3

Stitch the opening closed by hand. Insert a loop of ribbon.

Just leave the ends of the top hem open, string your ribbon though one channel then through the other so both ends of ribbon meet at the same side, then knot or sew them together and then repeat for the other side of the bag. I make these all the time, kids love them.

You siimply leave an opening in the layers at the top, for the draw string or ribbon..

Change the measurement and make a pair or two, use to pack your dress shoes inside your luggage and keep your clothes cleaner and your shoes protected.

Thank you, thewordunheard. I was trying to visualize where you were to insert the loop of ribbon and end up with a bag. It's not me this time! Good info on how to do the backed fabric, though.

I always love Martha's ideas, but her online tutorials are sometimes sloppy. This is just the how-to for making a quilt -- not the instructions for making a bag!
