Stamping Cookies

Make an impression on guests by adding eye-catching detail to basic cookies with ordinary rubber stamps, which come in a wide range of designs, or ceramic cookie stamps. Since rubber stamps can be custom ordered, create your own, like our monogram. To yield the best results, use the stamps on cookie dough containing no leaveners, such as shortbread.

Tools for the Task: Rubber and Ceramic Stamps
Use inexpensive ready-made rubber stamps with graphic patterns (polka-dot stamp by Outline, stripe stamp by Hero Arts). Or order a custom rubber stamp; ours from Wax-Works has the monogram recessed, so the letters will be raised on the cookie. Ceramic cookie stamps, such as the bird cookie stamp by Rycraft, come in many pretty motifs.

    I like this idea but I am not a cookie made from scratch kinda girl...So if I use Pillsbury cookie dough would this work?

    Recipes using leaveners (baking soda, eggs) and/or lots of sugar will cause the designs to spread or disappear. That's why shortbread recipes work the best. You could also try using a regular cookie recipe but substitute Hartshorn (Baker's Ammonia) for the baking soda (in same amount called for in recipe). It smells like ammonia while baking but the finished cookie has no bad taste or smell.

    I would love to know how to get my cookies to look like the photo, I have tried a few times and the impression from the cookie stamp nearly melts away every time! I see others had this problem too, does anyone have any suggestions?

    I decided to make these for my wedding favors despite the fact that I have absolutely no cooking expertise. After much experimentation, here's what I've found to work very well:
    Use good quality butter.
    I cut about 1/2 c of flour to make the dough less crumbly.
    Oil the stamps once, then dip them in powdered sugar before each stamp. Many recipes don't tell you to powder them, but that makes the stamps come out clearly with no sticking.
    I cook them 60-65 min at 275.

    I made these shortbread cookies using the Rycraft stamps from MSL weddings Spring 07 issue. My cookies wouldn't show the imprint no matter what I tried. I recommend this: use quality sweet butter...Land O'Lakes only (my mystake!) Other brands might have too much water content thus resulting in fading pattern! Also, do not use Silpats, again might add heat to the cookies having no print - use parchment. I even froze the cookies, chilled them for an hour...still no pattern. Any one had success?
