Anytime Oatmeal Cookies

Print our clip art labels and adhere them to an 18-ounce oatmeal canister for easy gift-giving. (And keep a few for yourself, too.) Bonus: The recipe is printed on the back.

Anytime Oatmeal Cookies

  • 1 cup cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour,
    baking powder, baking soda,
    cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt
    into a bowl. Beat butter and
    sugars until pale and fluffy. Mix
    in egg and vanilla, then flour
    mixture. Mix in oats, then raisins.

  2. Using a 1 1/4-inch ice cream
    scoop (or 1 tablespoon), drop
    dough onto parchment-lined
    baking sheets, spacing each
    scoop about 2 inches apart. Bake
    until edges are golden, about
    14 minutes. Let cookies cool on
    a wire rack.

Cook's Note

Cookies can be stored at room temperature for 1 week.

    Good recipe -- I had trouble with the label too. I found that if I opened it in a new tab, it seemed to work. Maybe that will help others? Keep trying!

    Ok, I know I am going to have nightmares about my experience in trying to download the clip art for the oatmeal cookies. Can anyone give me the secret. I have clicked, and allowed pop ups and printed the recipe. What's the secret? The directions say to try the recipe and then download. How does Martha know I've tried the recipe or anyone for that matter? Is that the secret? Helppppppppppppppppppppppp Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I just wanna print out the darn label.

    I love these cookies easy and delicious. The only change I make is to omit the granulated sugar since they already have the brown sugar and they were way too sweet for me. They are perfect.

    I made the anytime oatmeal cookies a few days ago and they were great, I did adjust my oven to 325 degrees instead of 350.

    I made the following adjustments and that seemed to help. Instead of 350, I used 325 for eight minutes instead of 14. Using the 1.25" scoop, I got four dozen cookies by scrimping on the amount in the scoop and really scraping out the bowl and spatula. They're about 1 3/4" across though, so they're basically bite-sized. Also, I used a mixer for blending everything except when adding the oats and raisins. They're okay. But I expected a lot more precision from a MSLiving recipe.

    I really want to try these but am concerned about printing the labels? Has anything been done about this? Also, are they supposed to be crispy or chewy? It seems the softer version isn't so hot. Does anyone there read these posts? Why are there no responses to all of their concerns?

    Perfect oatmeal cookies! Used 1 stick of butter and 1 cup butterscotch chips instead of raisins. Still moist on day 3.

    I had no problem printing the label on 11x17 paper (be sure to adjust printer preferences) but as Judita wrote the recipe produces very "crisp" cookies. Fine fresh out of the oven but older than that and your recipient will think they they've been given stale cookies - not a recipe I would share.

    SDRosie, the recipe on Page 160 lists "salt" in the ingredients and only gives the amount in the directions. I made them. They came out like biscoti. My daughter tried to break a piece off and couldn't. We laughed. I made 6 boxes for two pastors, church sec., and my kids. Right now, I'm making my own recipe of oatmeal cookies which I never have trouble with. This was a huge disappointment.

    Judita, I just purchased the Martha Stewart Living magazine (January 2011) and it showcased the recipe above (page 160). The recipe does call for a stick of butter and 1/3 cup of granulated sugar. I haven't had the chance to try the recipe or print out the template. I will post later with the results.

    Am in the middle of baking these cookies and notice that the ingredients call for "1 unsalted butter." Do you mean 1 stick? Also, 1 1/4-inch ice cream scoop only yielded 31 cookies, leveling each time.
    I went to the printer who juggled sizes until one fit the canister. This is a darling idea, but needs perfecting and EXACT instructions.

    The label is designed for 11x17 paper, not legal. I had to print at my work where we have a copier with this size paper. Unfortunately, I could only print bxw, so the interesting color combo is lost. We are enhancing with colored pencils. You could save to a thumb drive and print at a place like Kinko's.

    I used legal sized paper so the width was fine. Like the other poster stated, it won't print the entire label. It cuts off about half the label. It also seems to be a huge waste of (legal size) paper that's required to print the round top label. It would be nice if this could be fixed. There goes those 8 canisters of oatmeal I thought would make cute holiday hostess gifts!

    This is a really neat idea, but it's impossible to print out the entire label. It's too far to the right on the page and cuts off the bottom of the label and too long for the page and doesn't print the entire width of the label. Didn't you try this first before suggesting it to your readers?
