Dream Rooms: Bedding Basics

Body+Soul, April/May 2005

Pillow
Lay your head on something natural with a variety of alternatives to a conventional synthetic-fill pillow, such as cotton, wool, buckwheat hulls, or natural latex (from rubber trees). Your choice will depend on factors such as preferred sleeping position, firmness, and loft (height).

Duvet
For optimal sleeping comfort, there's no comparing your typical polyester-fill comforter to one filled with natural materials such as down, wool, or silk, which "breathe" -- no more clammy nights.

Mattress Pad
To protect your mattress and provide you with extra comfort and support, a wool-filled pad is a good choice. Wool wicks away moisture while being naturally resistant to mold, mildew, dust mites, and fire, and its springy fibers cushion the body, preventing pressure points.

Mattress
Most conventional mattresses are filled and covered with non-breathable (not to mention toxic) synthetic materials hospitable to mold, mildew, and dust mites. Healthier mattresses made from combinations of wool, cotton, and/or natural latex come in three basic styles: the innerspring style you're probably used to; a latex-core style; and a futon style.
