If you're new to knitting, or need a refresher, see our basic knitting how-to.

For Purse: Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rows = 2 inches

For Case: Gauge: 11 stitches and 15 rows = 2 inches.

  • U.S. size 8 needle (for purse)
  • Medium-weight yarn (for purse)
  • 1/4 yard lightweight cotton (for purse)
  • Zipper (for purse)
  • U.S. size 6 needle (for purse)
  • Lightweight yarn (for case)

  1. Step 1

Knit an 8-by-11-inch rectangle in stockinette (knit one row, purl next; repeat).

  2. Step 2

Fold in half, right sides facing; sew sides together with yarn needle. Turn right side out; steam flat with iron.

  3. Step 3

Unzip zipper (use one that fits pouch opening), pin inside pouch, and hand-sew in place with sturdy thread.

  4. Step 4

For liner, cut 8-by-13-inch piece of thin cotton fabric. Fold down short ends 1 inch, wrong sides facing; iron to crease. Fold cloth in half, end to end, right sides facing; sew along sides using 1/4-inch seam allowance. Do not turn inside out.

  5. Step 5

Place liner in pouch; whipstitch folded ends to zipper tape directly under zipper's teeth. Add a tassel to zipper, if desired.

  6. Step 6

Knit 4-by-15-inch rectangle in stockinette. Fold in half, right sides facing; sew sides together with yarn needle. Turn right side out; steam- iron flat. Sew snap inside; add button.

I would love to try the eyeglass case. Not much info for that included. What size needles? Is there supposed to be a way to close the pouch using the button shown?

Figuring out how best to put in the zipper was my hurdle. Get a zipper longer than the opening. Next one I'm going to knit a pattern, insert the zippers and then join the sides.

THESE instructions are incomplete, they do not tell you how many to cast on per project!

I want to try to make this but I'm confused... how many stitches should I cast on?
