Beeswax Candles

Elegant and easy-to-make, these tapered beeswax candles give off a subtle honey fragrance. For a homemade holiday gift, wrap the candles with festive ribbon and natural embellishments.

Materials

  • Beeswax sheets
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • No. 3/0 square-braid wick
  • Scissors
  • Hairdryer
  • Quarter
  • Ribbon, raffia, or paper band template
  • Double-sided tape
  • Artificial bumblebee embellishment (optional)

Steps

  1. Step 1

Trim an 8- by 16-inch beeswax sheet to 8 by 12 inches with a craft knife. Set aside scraps for making smaller candles. Cut a 10-inch length of wick.

  2. Step 2

Gently heat one short end of the beeswax sheet with a hairdryer set on low heat, no closer than 3 inches from wax, until wax is malleable but not shiny or melted.

  3. Step 3

Bend 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the heated short end over edge of work surface. Flip sheet over, and lay wick in the fold. Turn folded edge over wick, working from center to edges, pressing firmly to remove any air bubbles.

  4. Step 4

Begin rolling wick along length of wax sheet, pressing firmly the first few turns. Continue rolling slowly and gently, making sure to keep ends even and avoid compressing the honeycomb pattern. Heat the wax gently with the hairdryer if the wax hardens as you roll. When the diameter of the candle is that of a quarter or slightly larger, stop rolling and trim excess wax.

  5. Step 5

Heat edge with hairdryer, if necessary, and press into candle gently. Heat top and bottom of candle quickly with hairdryer. Taper bottom of candle slightly by squeezing with fingers, and press around wick at top of candle to secure layers. Trim wick to 1/2 inch at top of candle, and cut wick flush with bottom of candle.

  6. Step 6

For gift giving, tie ribbon or raffia around a set of candles. Alternatively, print and cut out paper bands and wrap around candles alone or over ribbon, securing with double-sided tape. Add an artificial bumblebee embellishment, if desired.
