Scandinavian Furniture

The Martha Stewart Show, November 2010

Some of Martha's favorite pieces of furniture hail from Scandinavia. Known for clean, elegant lines and delicate color schemes, airy spaces that maximize daylight, and a preference for natural materials, Scandinavian design is heavily influenced by the region's long winter.

Light-colored furniture, stark interiors, and the absence of curtains help compensate for the region's months of winter darkness, says Swedish design pioneer Lars Bolander. The aesthetic is refined and modern, and companies such as Conran and Ikea have a large impact on the area's contemporary furniture production, with locations in every town.
