    Thermal-Energy Plant

    Our first visit was to a thermal-energy plant on Nesjarvallarvegur Road near the 600-meter-tall Mt. Hengill, which boasts a fantastic volcanic crater. The white billows of steam can be seen for miles -- these indicate the bore holes where steam escapes. This is a simple but highly efficient plant that produces nothing but hot water -- and 45 percent of the capital's electricity.

    Herd of Sheep

    Small herds of sheep live near the geothermal plants and graze on the sweet grass. Their milk is used for a wonderful yogurt called skyr and many artisanal cheeses.

    Icelandic Flag

    The Icelandic flag flies everywhere in this small nation, which was settled in 874 by Norwegian Vikings.

    Iceland's President and Wife

    The president and his lovely wife, Dorrit Mousaieff, have been married for nearly nine years and have charmed all of Iceland. The president was just re-elected to a third four-year term.

    Icelandic Lobster Dinner

    We were treated by the first lady and the president to a magnificent dinner of Icelandic lobster, potatoes, and salad. Icelandic lobsters are small because they live in the frigid northern waters. Only the tails are eaten.

    Fourth of July in Maine

    For the Fourth of July, Martha was at Skylands, her home in Maine.

    Maine's Southwest Harbor

    Maine's Southwest Harbor was pristine -- the water clear, the boats all shipshape, and the sky bright blue.

    Sharkey and Francesca

    Sharkey and Francesca always come along on the boat trips. They keep on their leashes and harnesses, and spend most of the time napping, wrapped in towels.

    Matha's Home

    Martha's home is the highest house up on Ox Hill.

    Martha in Poland

    Martha's guide, Agnes Hansdorfer, and Martha went on a walking tour of the Old Town in Warsaw and strolled through all of the outdoor markets.

    Poland Architecture

    Martha loves taking photos of architecture and details for her visual library. This swag was beautifully fashioned in stone.

    One of Warsaw's many beautiful churches, which was destroyed in World War II and had to be completely rebuilt.

    This is one of the great squares where Poles gather for a drink, a coffee, or for good conversation.

    The Mermaid of Warsaw -- one of the beautifully designed fountains in the city.

    Restoring Poland

    There is much restoration going on -- the great town squares are being repaved with granite blocks, expertly laid by talented stone masons.

    Flower Garden

    Along the walking tour, Martha stopped by a beautiful flower garden where the roses felt like velvet.

    Sunflowers

    The unbelievable flower market had many types of blooms. Here is a picture of the lovely sunflowers.

    Your photos are so very beautiful! The one of the sunflowers in Poland instantly brightened my day! Is it for print anywhere? I would love it in my bedroom to wake up to! Thanks for sharing all you experiences!

    I enjoyed the pictures of Martha's 2008 summer vacations. I am impressed with Martha herself and all her accomplishments. I never miss any of her shows. She is a most gracious person.

    wouldn't we all love to be Martha.. traveling here and there.... since I cannot visit this places. it is nice to be able to see some of the many things and place she has been. From the pictures, it looks as if she had a wonderful time.. thanks

    Thanks Martha for sharing your vacation photos. I got to see places that I will probably never be able to visit and enjoyed them immensly.
    Maine is one place I've always wanted to go and through your pictures I got a little taste of it. Maybe someday I will venture there. Severia Hanst
