Tom Johnson walks the property of his Finger Lakes home, which is surrounded by 30 acres of vineyards. The region, near Rochester, New York, has more than 100 wineries.
Johnson crafted pendant light fixtures for his kitchen from old metal shades and gas-pipe fittings. The island counter is a three-inch-thick piece of maple; it is so heavy, it had to be brought into the house in two pieces and then glued together.
Natural touches abound in the open living area. The walls are clad in knotty pine, and the fireplace is made from local split river rock. The 12-foot-long Victorian-era dining table has a single-plank top; a pair of antique black lacquered candle stands comes from a Japanese temple. A raven decoy over the fireplace was probably made for keeping starlings away.
