Keden7 and her family have always loved the Yip-Yips from "Sesame Street," so when she found some Muppet-like fabric at JoAnn Fabrics, she couldn't resist making these costumes for her kids. The Yip-Yips' eyeballs are made from Styrofoam and the antennae from pipe cleaners. Inside the costumes are foam hats that make the heads a bit pointy and the lips are foam-filled and attached to a stick, so the wearer can move the mouths with ease.
JoelleBurnette transformed her daughter's umbrella into a giant jellyfish using bubble wrap bunched up under a layer of clear plastic wrap, adorned with silk tentacles. Wearing a mask and snorkel, she wound the tentacles around herself, as if she were caught by the sea creature.
When KatrinaLynne's 3-year-old daughter wanted to by syrup for Halloween, she assumed she was in for a difficult and time-consuming project. Once she got started, she was surprised to find that she could create a syrup costume, as well as a companion waffle costume for her son, in just a few days, and for very little money.
The syrup costume is made from brown felt, yellow fabric, ribbon, and paint, and the top is an empty cookie container painted yellow. For the waffle, KatrinaLynne used a 1-inch foam square, on which she drew the waffle's gridlike pattern and used a craft knife to cut out each 2-by-2-inch square. She used brown marker for the lines and yellow chalk for to color the inside; the syrup on top is made from felt and the butter is foam she colored yellow.
Tiachia is enjoys making humorous costumes. Of her octopus getup, she says, "I put on the costume and drove to work. On the way, a guy cut me off, so I shook a tentacle out the window at him. He nearly crashed! At my desk, I was the most efficient employee ever, all eight legs typing, filing, and poking my coworkers in the ears!"
