The woods are visible from every room of Jim and Sara Coffou's country home, thanks to an elongated design and largely glass facade. The family can take endless walks without seeing a soul and go on 50-mile bike rides -- two things they can't do on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

The streamlined kitchen offers plenty of hidden storage; the island, built of red cedar and marble, houses the family's collection of classic Heath Ceramics "Coupe" tableware.

During cold Indiana winters, the cozy fireplace nook becomes Jim and Sara's favorite place to relax.

The floor throughout the house is concrete coated with epoxy, giving the interior a unified feel. On the patio, a midcentury-modern furniture set, handed down from Sara's parents, was reupholstered in period-appropriate Maharam fabric.

The open dining and living space is large enough for entertaining but intimate enough for small family gatherings.

At dusk, the lights come on, projecting a warm glow onto the cedar-screened wall.

Without neighbors close by, privacy isn't a major concern for the Coffous; Jim and Sara's bedroom, one of three, looks out onto the bucolic setting -- no shades required.
