A day at the beach needn't end with a bag full of sand.
Tote How-To
To make this tote, cut a 36-by-18-inch piece of fiberglass mesh and 6 lengths of 1 1/2-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon (two at 60 inches, two at 20 inches, and two at 18 inches). Iron the four shorter ribbons in half lengthwise. Sandwich one 18-inch side of mesh in one 18-inch ribbon. Pin, then stitch in place close to ribbon edge. Repeat on opposite side.
Sew ends of 60-inch ribbons together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, making a large loop. Fold mesh in half widthwise; press to crease. Unfold, and line up seams in ribbon loop with crease in mesh (points A and B); pin.
Starting at point A, sew the ribbon along its outer edge to end of the mesh (overlapping 18-inch ribbon); turn corner and continue sewing lengthwise down entire opposite edge; turn corner and stitch back to point A. Repeat, starting at point B. Fold mesh along crease. To finish sides, sandwich each in a 20-inch ribbon, leaving an inch overhang at each end. Pin, then sew in place. Fold back overhangs, and stitch.

The material 'fiberglass net/screen/mesh' was basically used for screening in doors and windows. It's not really made of fiberglass (I'm really wondering why it was labelled as such), but of PVC.
Pet mesh is the best, it hold up well and it easy to work with. They make great beach bags, for shells wet towels. Fiberglass mesh,it's Fiberglass why want it? Just saying.
I bought a roll of replacement screen used for windows at Home Depot to make this bag.
I think this would be good made in tulle or nylon net as well--that way, you could have a big color selection. Good idea--love your projects!
I made this with white mesh and daisy ribbon . Easy to do and I get lot's of compliments and looks of amazement that I made it.
Quilt shops and big box stores stock the mesh. It is a popular fabric for bags and purses.
I just use window screening on a roll which I purchase at Walmart. I don't find it difficult to work with at all! I use upholstery thread and a jeans needle in my machine. I've also made several purses, covering the screening with fabric and pockets on the inside, add handles and velcro to close. Really easy!
Sounds like a great and fairly simple project, but where does one buy fiberglass mesh? Hardward store? Can you sew it with a regular machine needle and thread? Does the mesh come in more than one size? Thanks for any help.
Whoops, my email came in as Rope Coasters again, so I almost deleted it, guess someone made a little goof on not changing the subject line???
I've been making bags like this for the back of my daughter's wheelchair for quite some time now, and I even add pockets. However, I've found that the pet mesh screening works better. Sharp objects can tear the regular screening quite easily. I even made a larger one that can be used for small shopping trips.
Not a rope coaster, but great beach bag
What happened to rope coasters--the title that was on my email??????
ok - where do you find fibreglass mesh??? and why is this posted at the end of the summer? or did i miss it in June?
I love the idea, but fiberglass mesh can be a real pain to work with. I thought of tulle, but the holes would not be big enough and it tears easily. Any ideas for something a little more user friendly but durable?
I found mesh at a store that makes window shades out of the mesh...scraps to make the bags, if available, are downright CHEAP!!!
I added pockets on front and back between the 2 center ribbons. They made safer places for sunglasses or for easy to reach things.
Where might one find the Fiberglass Mesh?? In Fabric Stores??
THE BEST beach bag I have seen...wet things begin drying right away, and the sand sifts right through! I would add some mesh pockets on the outside for sunglasses and other more delicate things to be stored so they don't get damaged. Excellent project!
if the holes are big enough this would be great for getting rid of all the sand before the bag comes into the house. does this mesh come in different [filtered word] sizes is what i was wondering
great shell collecting bag for kids! No more sand and broken shells in the pockets.
This would make a great shell
