Fold-up Box

This package opens like a blossom.
Martha Stewart Living, February 2004

This package opens like a blossom. Measure a gift's width and height, then draw a cross shape on mat board (center square slightly larger than width, each flap slightly longer than height). Cut out with a utility knife. Score flaps on the colored side. Make box top the same way, but with shorter flaps and a center square 1/8 inch bigger on all sides. Fold all flaps; place gift inside box, and affix top to bottom with a rubber band.

Instead of a rubber band or a ribbon, I used paper tape (http://www.amazon.com/EK-Success-Martha-Stewart-Vintage/dp/B004S67852, e.g.) It works like a charm and spruces up a plain colored box! Thanks, Martha!

This a fantastic project I am always looking for different size gift boxes. I do think a ribbon glued to hold the lid instead of a rubber band for reuse. If I could just find the right materials to make it bigger to fit a hat.

i would think maybe a ribbon might be more attractive than a rubber band. if i make this, i will use ribbon.

This is a great idea, especially for delicate items or items that may become damaged if you try to take them out of the box.
