Apple-Print Bag

Apples aren't just for eating. The cut side of an apple half, dipped in candy-colored paint, can be stamped onto otherwise ordinary canvas tote bags and backpacks.

  • Apple
  • Knife
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint
  • Markers (optional)

  1. Step 1

Cut an apple in half from top to bottom. Make sure the cut is smooth and flat. Use a paintbrush to apply the paint evenly over the cut side of the apple.

  2. Step 2

With the apple half, cut side down, stamp the surface of the object you want to decorate. The more times you stamp, the less vivid the print will be, so reapply paint, or use the other half.

  3. Step 3

Use additional apple halves to print with different colors, if desired. To draw stems and leaves, use black or green markers (or paint).

To answer the paint question I've seen here several times:

Use non-dimensional fabric paint (preferred choice) or regular acrylic paint mixed with textile medium. Follow product directions.

Typically textile/acrylic paint mix must be prewashed to remove (paint-repelling sizing), heatset and then allowed to cure for 7 days; whereas ready-to-use fabric paints do not.

I made this and it came out great!

I would like to find that backpack as well. I don't like the ones at Oriental Trading. You would think if they are going to post a craft they would give you some idea as to where to get the supplies.

Which kind of paint do you use? Would acrylic work? Or does it have to be fabric paint if stamping on fabric?
