Handy Deicer

Wet, leaky bags are a problem whether you use rock salt or a lawn-friendly deicer that has magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, or sodium chloride. Keep the product handy in a galvanized covered trash can fitted with a metal scoop. Use sparingly, and follow the safety directions on the label.

Instead of a scoop, I use a screw-top plastic coffee canister, with large holes punched in the lid. This way, I can more evenly and sparingly apply the salt.

While sand is nice, it is NOT a de-icer.
Sometimes you HAVE to use salt....

Since salt is harmful to trees and plants, and because many people use too much of it, I'd recommend mixing it with sand, which is also available at a hardware store.

I found mine at Ace Hardware. I also use them for bird seed.

Where can I find these small trash cans? Great idea...
