In Sweden, the holiday season begins on December 13 with the celebration of Lucia (the name means "light"). To mark the holiday, kids wake at dawn to deliver breakfast to their parents in bed, or, accompanied by an adult, to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and workplaces. Traditionally, they wear or carry candles to illuminate the dark winter morning, but candles can be omitted. Adults, weary from holiday shopping, will appreciate the gesture.

Don't forget that the children are singing too. Very traditional songs for this special day. Traditionally you eat yellow "Lussekatter" (Lucia cats or buns). It is a yeast bread, a little sweet and flavored with cardamom and saffron, and decorated with raisins. The buns are shaped in different ways. Two of the shapes are Lucia cat and Yule boar...They taste wonderful!
