Extend a Windowsill
Select plywood the same thickness as sill; cut it as wide as sill and 12 inches deep. Attach bottom of shelf to bottom of sill with 3 hinges: 1 at the center, the others near the sides.

Cut 2 right triangles from wood thin enough to lie flat beneath folded shelf; trim tips. Brackets should extend 3/4 of the way across shelf and 3/4 down apron. Hinge brackets to apron. Paint before installing.
Convert a Cabinet
Use a square space, at least 14 by 14, deep enough to hold bottles on their sides. Cut two 1-by-12 boards to match dimensions of depth and diagonal between corners of shelf; sand to fit.

Notch middle of each piece at 90 degrees: With pencil and speed square, mark wood; jigsaw to make a 3/4-inch-wide notch that stops at center. Bisect pieces at notched points. Paint to match shelves.

Botill, can you post a picture?
OR HOW ABOUT HANGING YOUR PLANTS FROM THE CEILING?
Here's another idea: I have double hung windows in my kitchen. I mounted short shelving strips and adjustable brackets on my kitchen window - on the lower window sash itself, not the casement around the window. Then I had 1/4" plate glass shelves cut to fit. I have one shelf at the top of the lower sash so that my tall orchids have room, and another shelf farther down - but high enough to be out of the way. My plants love it and it's really attractive. I get lots of compliments.
Maybe instead of one long shelf you could hang two smaller shelves to allow for extra high faucets.
Great idea, but I have a windsowsill dilemma. When my countertops were replaced, we got a extra high faucet. We had to eliminate the sill altogether because it interferred with the faucet. I miss it as a place to have my African VIolets. Any ideas for a replacment for the sill? A lhnging shelf maybe?

The window sill ledge is a nice idea. I would suggest using very good quality hinges and the triangular braces under the ledge should be measured to be longer and taller than shown so that they come to near the outer edge of the ledge.. I have in the past owned a 'drop leaf' table and it was not very long before the leaf, when raised was sitting at an angle. The weight of a cat or from using this narrow ledge as a desk will result in the same thing happening.
Like the windowsill idea it looks like something I would use when I retire to an retirement community apartment where I would need more space. Thanks.
Wish I had thought of this...lol. Fantastic! Nice and neat...but there when you need it. And my cats.....well, belated Christmas present for them....lying in the sun on the table....what more could they ask for...lol. Thanks for another great one!!
great idea need a new desk area for my small space
WoW~ What a smart!!
That's good idea. I'll going to do on this Sunday
I actually used the fold out table idea on a small screen porch. Instead of all of the wanes (spelling) coating being solid one small wall actually we hinged and put folding legs on each corner ...great for quick table ,..fold down when you want the extra floor space....The kids used it for crafts while they were on the porch..
HalleCat...great idea for the fold down extra table! I have a perfect place to use for that. It could be for extra seating for large parties or to use as a project or work table, study table for homework or recipe books...all kinds of uses. THANKS!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
I like the window shelf idea. I plan to have my husband build one for my cats to have a window seat.
HalleCat, thanks so much....I love both your ideas, but especially the "wish book"; I'm going to start one and store the ideas that I love, but can't get to right away.
Why not combine the ideas? Put the fold-down shelf in front of the wine rack then you have a place to set glasses and pour the drinks.
Instead of the triangle idea, I saw hardware made specifically for fold-down shelves at Menards, I'm sure you can find it at other home fixit stores. I really like the cat perch idea, and I know a couple of kitties who would agree. Hope they don't read this.

You are so right Kate81650 - what a perfect cat perch!
Actually, how many have pass through window areas between the kitchen and family room. Why not use this there? It would be a great way to add an extra table for big gatherings with flexibiity to lower and tuck out of the way when not in use. I'm putting this idea in my wish book for future use.
BRILLIANT SIMPLY BRILLIANT especially so for those who have older (read O-L-D) homes with proper window sills!
My cats will LOVE this! Wonderful idea!!!
This is a great idea, there so many uses that i use it for. thanks
This is a great idea. What possibilities for my plants!!
Great idea....another thing to add to my husband's "to-do" list!! I can already see it in my laundry room, too.
I love this idea
This shelf is would make a great folding table in a small laundry room as well
Just the idea I have been looking for to extend the windowsill in my bedroom.

You need a Redo on this one !
they are both good ideas, you just have to have some experience to separate the two ideas to make them work.
It seems as though they got 2 different projects combined accidentally.....ooops
Thanks. This idea looks so simple and is just what I have been looking for to make a place for some of my potted plants.
pictures and directions don't match
