Dish towels are inexpensive and washable. They're also hemmed -- a handy shortcut when sewing this dishy apron. You'll need two towels: The first, placed vertically, serves as the bib of the apron and the backside of its pockets. The second, positioned horizontally across the bottom half of the first towel, wraps around the wearer's hips and provides the front of the pockets. The towel that serves as the bib should be folded and hemmed along its long edges so that it is not too wide for the chest of the wearer. Next, hem the bottom of this towel (the vertical one) to the desired pocket depth. Lay the second towel horizontally across the first, leaving 4 inches of overhang at the bottom; then sew the towels together along the bottom and side edges of the vertical towel. Stitch a line vertically up the center to make the pockets. The basic shape of the apron -- an upside-down T with two long pockets -- should now be complete. To create neck ties, cut two 12-inch lengths of 3/4-inch twill tape, available at sewing shops, and stitch one end of each to the top of the bib. Do the same for the waist ties, but cut them longer: Fourteen inches apiece will be long enough for the average waist.
Our local 4-H as use this as a beginning sewing project It even gets the boys involved in sewing. It was a little too big for them so we have them use a matching wash cloth for the top. It's a wonderful that always comes out very nice. This makes sewing something that they want to do again.
You could wear this one every day until it just wears out and still have something to work with: dishtowels to rags. Cheery.

have done something similar....only used 1 apron, purchased at Cost Plus, made an apron that only goes around the waist...no bib...sewed the waist ties like the directions here...my girls loved them...can't wait to find fall and winter dish towels to make more....everything OLD is NEW again....love it!!!!!!

This "Tip" is so old that it has long white whiskers. In the 1950's when I was a boy both my mom and grandma made their aprons in much the same way.

Pelican66, I like your idea, that way the material is thicker in case you get something on you that would soak through just a dish towel (sounds like I am very messy, but not really). When I have made aprons in the past I am always worried the material might not be thick enough. Thanks! Lovestosew

I think this only requires 2 dish towels, one for the bib and one for the "skirt" part. If the "bib" towel hangs down behind the "skirt" towel, then you can sew around the sides and bottom of the "bib" towel to create the pocket. Sew down the middle of the pocket if you want 2 pockets. hope this helps.

I'm a very handy seamstress, but I need step-by-step pictures to understand what the heck to do. Is it possible to give pictures for those of us who are visual learners? Otherwise, it looks cute.
With my behind and front, I haven't seen my toes in 30 years, they would have to be someeeeeeeee dishtowels. I can't for the life of me wonder where I could find some??????????
I agree, those are some huge dishtowels; but then of course the MS brand are. But, it's a great idea. My Grandmother used to make dishtowels out of everything. They were beautiful too!

if you're into coordinating, could use a quilted placemat for the bib and matching table runner for around the waist, and do the same and all would match placemats for a picnic, BBQ or whatever

Oh, yes, great to have lots of these around for grilling! I'm going to try a few smaller ones for the tykes who like to help me in the kitchen.
