Button Napkin Rings

Martha Stewart Living, February 1995

Stray buttons needn't be consigned to the bottom of the sewing kit -- a colorful assortment of these tiny fasteners can be used to perk up a table setting. To turn a cluster of Bakelite buttons into an eye-catching napkin ring, cut a 6-inch-long piece of 1 1/4-inch-wide elastic. Hand-stitch the ends together, and sew on enough buttons to completely cover the elastic.

you can also use thread like elastic and braid or crochet while threading buttons through it.

Hey gals, you can find at least a picture for now of these cute napkins under "crafts by material" then select "buttons" then go to page 2 and they are under "button crafts" . The simple embroidery instructions that are tied with it as a link are currently not working, instead, you get a "webpage not available" type error message. Let's hope that this will be fixed soon for gals like me that do not know how to embroider, since this is so very adorable!!! Good luck!

i got wooden napkin rings from the thrift shop brand new....I am willing to bet that you could always use glue and adhere them onto the wooden napkin rings thus avoiding the sewing aspect all together. :)

I'm not sure if it is the colors they put together, or the photography....but these are not very attractive. I think this project would be much nicer on elastic thread and used as a bracelet.

I used this idea long ago from a different source to make a very nifty bracelet. One can also incorporate beads between the buttons.

I ,like jhiggins, would like to know where the button embroidery napkins that were shown on 04/16/08, are??? I don't like to go to the web-site to find that the patterns to do the craft is not there. I just left Walmart (30 miles away) to buy the napkins to do the button embroidery Martha just showed today. So , where did ya hide 'em?? Noiseynana

And if you follow the recommendation of craft by material I still cannot find the craft. I did follow the first recommendation and I did find the napkins but I would like to see all the examples not being as imaginative as some. I hope someone will change and make this right soon.

I too would like to know where the napkins with buttons embroidery is. I thought by now the mistake would have been caught and corrected. I guess this site is not well monitored????

Found what we're looking for. If you click on craft by material on the left of this page, it's listed under Button Craft.

Yes, this is the wrong project. The one on tv showed sewing buttons onto the actual napkin, not napkin rings.
