When Cutting Corners is Just Fine

Martha Stewart Living, September 2008

A carpet remnant -- one of your own or from a rug store -- can serve as the basis of a distinctive but inexpensive custom floor covering. Have a rug dealer cut the piece to your specifications and bind it with twill tape (shown) or have it serged in a matching color.

Consider experimenting with shapes and borders. Here, the cut-out corners on this entryway rug give it an interesting look and provide leeway for surrounding household objects or pieces of furniture.
