DIY Laundry Detergent

  1. Step 1

Use a gentle, nontoxic soap or detergent, and boost the cleaning power as needed by adding 1/2 cup borax. This naturally occurring mineral has antiseptic, antibacterial, water-softening, and whitening properties.

If you check the side panel of the Borax box, it recommends 1/2 c. for front loading machines. If I'm doing a prewash, I put the Borax in the dispenser, otherwise I just put it right in with the clothes and haven't had any problems.

I also have a HE machine. The Borax website says to add 3/4C to front loading machines, but that seems lit's it's too mcuh. The instructions for delicates says to disolve 1/4 C. I think that is a better idea.

Can you use borax in an HE front loading washing machine?
