Red, White, and Blue Ribbon Stars

Use ribbons to create these patriotic stars of the party: garlands and festive straws that incorporate the colors and elements of the American flag. Make a mix of medium and large stars for the garlands (we used 1 1/2- to 2-inch-wide ribbons) and miniature stars for the straws (1/4-inch-wide ribbons).

Stars How-To
Loop 1 end of ribbon, as shown (loop should resemble an "awareness" ribbon); secure with double-sided tape. Make a second loop, to the left of the first; secure with tape. Make and secure 3 more loops, each one opposite the previous loop. Cut end; tape to center. Tape a paper circle to back. Stick 2 smaller circles, in contrasting colors, to front (trim 1 with decorative scissors, and add a message if desired).

Garlands How-To
Tape ribbon tails to backs of some stars. Tape all stars on long lengths of ribbon, and hang.

Straws How-To
Cut slits in backing of each star for straw.

I have a 5 point star made out of cardboard that I use to wrap the ribbon around. I wrap the ribbon, pull the star out and then hot glue it together. It makes a much neater star. I've used this to make Christmas ornaments with my special needs students. LOVE this project!

I love the way these look.

I do not love the directions. I tried these many different ways, with different sizes and types of ribbon and tape. Getting them just right is not easy, so if you're going to make these, be prepared for a more "rustic" look. Also, don't think that you can do this with kiddos...this was WAY too complicated for me to do with my daughter's help.

    Sigh...I had such high hopes.

I wish the picture on how to fold the ribbon was a little bit more detailed. I must be more of a visual learner and also am wondering if I bought the right kind of ribbon, that part wasn't clear either.

This is a great craft, and so easy. I agree this would make great decorations for many events.

Such a cute idea. You could use different colors of ribbons and decorate for birthdays, baby showers, themed parties, etc. Thanks for sharing "P
