Window Box Alternative

Martha Stewart Living, May 2008

This window box alternative showcases your flowers and their pots. Cut a 1-by-12-inch wooden board so that it extends a few inches beyond the window on both sides. Measure the pot's diameter just below the lip (ours was 7 1/2 inches); divide by 2 for radius. Make a note of both numbers. Mark the center of the board with a pencil; measure out from this mark, in each direction, the length of the diameter plus 2 inches. Mark these 2 points with a pencil. Clamp the board to a work surface. Set a circle cutter to radius. Insert a drill bit into 1 mark; cut hole for pot. Repeat with remaining 2 marks to cut 2 more holes. Prime and paint board and brackets with exterior-quality finishes. Screw brackets to board and then to wall.

Home Depot offers lovely terra cotta pots that have a glaze bottom, just perfect for this idea, or DIY paint!

I made something similar in the past for my cats to lounge on outside. I cut one [filtered word] for a pot of wheat grass. It gives my kitties a tasty treat and a shady place to lounge up away from my dogs when they are outside.

This is much easier than traditional window boxes, which sometimes need daily watering to keep the plants properly watered and not wilted. I think there's more flexibility in using the terra cotta pots. And they look great too!

I love the fact that the terracotta pots don't have to be the same size - what a wonderfully innovative idea!!

What a great Idea! I live in southern Alberta, Canada and am thinking of plants that survive cild winters to pot in the falll to so that there is color in them all year long...maybe mini evergreens and I could put mini lights on them for christmas....Hmmm I have some thinking to do.
But none the less my windows are getting these window boxes this year.
