Putting Down Roots

Step aside, pumpkins -- here's an unexpected and inviting accent for the dinner table.

  • Daikon radishes
  • Turnips
  • Knife
  • Black-headed pushpins
  • Pairing knife
  • Black marker
  • Shallow bowl

  1. Step 1

Using a knife, slice off enough of the leafy top to create a flat base.

  2. Step 2

Insert black-headed pushpins to form eyes; for the mouth, cut a half-moon into the vegetable with a paring knife, and fill it in with a black marker.

  3. Step 3

Arrange several in a shallow bowl, varying the heights and the shapes.

This is the cutest, funniest little idea. I forgot to do it last fall, but am making a note on the October calendar for this year. So hilarious.
