Steamer Storage

Martha Stewart Living, July 2004

Bamboo steamers have holes that let air in and out to cook food uniformly. For just that reason, these containers are also well suited to storing onions, garlic, and shallots, which require ventilation and should not be refrigerated. Place all three in a single unit, or if you use lots of all of them, keep each kind in its own section of a stackable steamer. Place the steamer on a tray or plate to catch flaking skins, and set it on the counter for quick access.

Where can you find these to purchase?

I LOVE that idea!!! I keep potatoes in a basket in a pullout drawer in my pasta/sopice cabinet. Do not keep the onions and potoatoes near each other, as the onions will cause the potatoes to rot quickly. I will use the steamer in another cabinet, for my onions, now!! Love it!!!!!!!

I have a steamer sitting up in the cupboard somewhere, its time to take it out :) This is an awesome Idea, Thankyou.

I don't use my steamer much these days so this is a great use of an almost donated item!

Potatoes are usually supposed to stored in a cool, dark and dry place and usually in a paper bag or something similar. Try not to store them near onions though because the gases released will speed up spoilage of both. Hope this helps!
