Coordinating Comforter

Ready-made duvet covers can be pricey, and you may not be able to find one with just the right color or pattern to complement your sheets. Make your own perfect match with two flat sheets.

Materials

  • Two flat sheets
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle and thread
  • Twill-tape ties, buttons, or Velcro tape

Steps

  1. Step 1

Use a pair the same size as the comforter. Place them right sides together, and sew around the perimeter with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving an opening along the bottom that extends to 24 inches from each corner. Turn right side out.

  2. Step 2

To fasten cover shut once the comforter is inside, sew twill-tape ties, buttons and buttonholes, or Velcro tape along the two inside edges of the opening.

Do you cut or open the finished edges of the sheets before you sew the 1/2" seam?

I seen an episode of Martha making these duvet covers on the Hallmark channel several months ago and loved all the different closure ideas. I had the episode saved but recently had our dvr upgraded and lost it. I wish they would show it again so I can follow step by step. She also showed ideas on how to make the comforter stay in place by sewing twill tape or ribbon in each corner....Any chance of showing that episode again Martha?

I USED YOUR IDEA TO COVER AN OLD COMFORTER, BUR I "TYIED" IT LIKE TYING A QUILT. I USED SOME SOFT THICK THREAD AND A LARGE EYED NEEDLE I SPACED THE TIES ABOUT 18 IN. APART. THE COVER DOESN'T BUNCH UP AND I REPURPOSED AN OLD COMFORTER! MARTHA HALE DECATUR ALABAMA.

This is GREAT! I have been wanting to get a new duvet for a long time now, but just can't afford it. I'm working on a quilt (I'm a beginner..ha ha) but the quilt is for winter time, not Las Vegas summer time. This is will work great!
    Thank you!

Would you be able to show a picture of a duvet cover that is fastened with twill-tape ties? This would be helpful.
