Natural Pest Repellent

Martha Stewart Living, March 2002

Keep slugs and aphids away from window boxes with a homemade, nonchemical pest spray. Place one peeled onion, two peeled garlic cloves, and one teaspoon cayenne pepper in the jar of a blender. Add three cups of water, and blend until smooth. Let the mixture sit overnight, strain the liquid into a spray bottle, and coat plants generously. The solution will keep, refrigerated in the bottle, for up to one week.

THESE ARE HORNED TOMATO CATIPELLARS. I HAND PICK MINE OFF AND PUT IN A COFFEE CAN. THEY OFTEN GET WHITE WASP LARVE ON THEM WHICH ALSO KILLS THEM. I JUST TRIM OFF THE DAMAGED LEAVES. SOMETIMES OTHER THINGS PECK AT THE TOMATOES LIKE BIRDS.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the big green caterpillers that are chowing down on my tomatoes before they get a chance to grow?Very frustrating.

does anyone have any advice on how to get rid rats and keep them out of my yard

We have resorted to an electric fence this year around our vegetable garden to keep the deer out!!! After they mowed down a couple rows of sugar snap peas, a tomato plant, a pepper plant and endless rows of swiss chard we have given up. It is on a timer from 9 pm to 6 am. I have to unhook it to get into the garden for working but it has stopped the feast. I think I heard a yelp the other morning.....maybe I was dreaming....it does work!!!

does anybody know if this solution will help deter fruit flies away from indoor plants? I don't find any problems with other pests except for fruit flies accumulating in my room because of my plants.

I have been over run with chipmunks this year! They are darling, but they are destroying my lawn. I can't even mow without turning my ankle in one of their 50 holes. How can I solve this problem without hurting the animals or endangering my 8 pound Shih-Tzu?

This recipe works for me mix 1 Cup Milk -1T dish liquid -1 egg -1Tcooking oil blend well add 1 gal water. use sprayer spray every 4 days and after any rain

I have heard of taking hair from your hair brush and putting it by your plants. Also, to get rid of slugs by the hostas, leave them beer. Take a glass beer (long neck) with two inces of beer, and set it near infected area for a couple of days. The slugs will crawl in but won't crawl out.

You're right! Natural pest control and a marinade rolled into one! I love it!

  • 20 May, 2008

Sounds like a pretty good marinade, too! Have to "cook" this up this weekend and see if it protects my hostas this summer.
