Martha Stewart Living, May 2004
Turn a plain old soak into a real retreat with bath salts you make yourself. Start with about 4 cups of sea salt or kosher salt. Mix in several drops of an aromatic bath oil (available at bath and beauty stores) and, if you wish, dried fragrant plants, such as lavender or eucalyptus. Pour into a jar for yourself or to give as a gift. Use a few spoonfuls of salts per bath; to keep herbs from floating, spoon the mixture into a spice sachet (available at gourmet grocery stores).

Do you really think Martha Stewart would have a misspelled word on anything?
spoonfuls is plural.....who would say "a few spoonful"? Geez...Great gift for teachers, coworkers, etc jut add a personalized label - thanks Martha!
was it really necessary to critique the language who really cares if it is spoonsful or spoonfuls I know when I read a contributors comment I want to know about the projects not the language unless the incorrect word changes the context of what was written. I'm sure the proofreaders are only human and being human everyone can make a mistake. lighten up people
actually if you'd bothered to check merriam-webster, spoonfuls is just fine. ..oh the humanity!

Yes, you can mix epsom salts with any kind of salt, but if you are making a bath to sooth aches and pains it dilutes it. I also add some baking soda to the mix, and if you have it, some cornstarch (stops it from sticking). I add a drop of red food coloring and mix well. Then I add rose or lavender oil with clary sage or another essential oil, a tablespoon of sunflower oil (it is 30% vitamin e). Mix it well and put in large mouth jars. 1 cup per bath

Has anyone used Epsom salt in combination with sea salt?
I found a recipe for a body scrub (salt or sugar) on about.com. All I did was type in recipe for sugar scrub.Body Scrub Recipe-Ingredients:
1/2 cup oil(sweet almond or grapeseed oil are good choices);1 cup sea salt (you can also substitute sugar, which is gentler); 5 drops essential oils. The oil depends on the result you want-lavender is relaxing, lemongrass is refreshing and rosemary is stimulating. Combine the oil and salt in a bowl and mix well. Add essential oil and combine well.

Great idea! I have a lot of oils and herbs I can use! I will make stocking stuffers with them.

I make my own herbal oils, so I figure bath salts along with, would be easy enough. And true, would make great gifts..
You can also use epsom salt instead of edible salt. It is in the pharmacy section at Walmart. It is good for soaking sore muscles.
I have made bath salt using essential oils from the craft section at walmart. I like ocean breeze. Then I added a few drops of blue food color since I thought it would match the scent well. I gave these as gifts in inexpensive glass jars with a shell for a scoop. Everyone loved them. You could use any scent/color you wanted and be creative about the scoop.
Instead of mineral oil - try using walnut oil, found in the grocery store. I attended an organic farm that offered classes in making scrubs. They used raw sugar (coarse carmel colored), walnut oil, essential oils, and dried flowers - all blended in your food processor. I happened to use sweet orange oil and dried calendula flower
I mix an equal amount of sugar and olive oil together for a facial mask which I leave on for 5 minutes. Works great. I do the same thing with salt and oil for my hands.
I'd like to comment on the sugar scrub made with mineral oil. Mineral is bad for the skin and is know to cause breakouts. It acts as a barrier over the skin that does not allow the essential oils to penetrate the skin. The majority of products that we buy at drugs stores (lotions, cleansers, scrubs, etc) contain mineral oil as a filler. So anything good for you skin that might be in those products is actaully blocked by the mineral from doing any good!!
Help now some one tell me how to make the sugar scrub or where to find it Pleassseeee
what are the measurements/ingredients for the body scrub??*meg
I cant wait to try this. I made a huge batch of sugar body scrub last year (mineral oil, sugar, essential oils) and this will be a nice compliment to it.... not to mention great little holiday gifts!
