Popcorn and Fruit Strings
These delicate garlands fulfill a time-honored role in Christmas-tree decoration. Since the seventeenth century, holiday trees have been ornamented with foodstuffs, symbols of plenty meant to recall the garden of Eden.
- Dried fruit
- Needle and thread
To make these strands, use an assortment of dried fruits, and devise small repeating patterns suitable for a necklace; string with needle and thread.
Along with the traditional white popcorn (this is the Wisconsin white birch variety), we used dried Michigan cherries, golden raisins, black currants, and cranberries. You can feed the fruit and popcorn to the birds at season's end.
