Tool Wall

Organizing Good Things 2004

A hammer and nails are easy to find if everything is kept in its place. Create that place by marking the outlines of tools on a garage wall or above your workbench. First hang your tools, and carefully trace around them lightly in pencil. Then remove the tools, and go over the pencil lines using more visible markers. We used black marker, but paint pens also work well.

This idea is older than the hills. My dad had jars of nuts, bolts and screws neatly arranged on thin shelves. I used peg board and hooks on the garage walls to organize my tools, kids toys and sports equipment. The peg board hooks could be rearranged when necessary to allow for new tools or equipment.

When I saw this it really took me back in time. I am 66 years old and my Dad did this in his workshop well over 50 years ago as I was a small child looking in wonder at my Dad's organization. He had no problem adding new tools either as he placed everything in a way to make that possible. The jars of screws, bolts, etc., was another thing he did. Mom was the Martha Stewart of yesteryear, as she taught me things I now see Martha teaching others, and I've done for years. I taught my kids.

Staciet's suggestion about using chalkboard paint and chalk is great! When I saw this picture I immediately thought about what happens when you add or remove a tool. Reconfiguring the arrangement and redrawing with chalk is a perfect solution. Clever girl, Stacie! :-)

My uncle's work room in his basement looked this same way. I have used baby food jars for all things I want to see in whether they are hung up or just sitting. Such a great idea for the tools as everyone that takes your hammer never hangs it up in the same place!

If you fear permanent marker or paint, use pre-mixed or homemade chalkboard paint so that you can change your arrangement as your tool collection grows!

Are those baby food jars hanging on the bottom of the shelf? I've been using the storage drawers but you can't see what's inside~~size of the tacks, nails, screws, etc?
