Fathers who read a lot will give this gift great reviews. Cut a piece of 2-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon 3 inches longer than twice the height of the book; snip a point at each end to prevent fraying. Sew a 1 1/2-inch-by-2-inch photograph to the ribbon by hand-stitching each corner. You might offer the bookmark with a new novel, wrapping the book with colored tissue paper and tucking the bookmark between two pages. Finish the gift with a simple ribbon or string.

Sorry... it cut me off. I printed the photo onto transfer paper and ironed it on the fabric. It worked great!
I made this using dark blue fabric and scanned a photo of my parents when they were young
An additional comment from Richmondgal: Why not sew more than one vinyl pocket onto the bookmark to represent more than one child? Dad would surely love this!
I would think that regular photos would tear away easily. Why not sew a clear vinyl pocket to the bookmark that's open on 3 of 4 sides and slide the photo in? It would protect the picture, wear better, and allow it to be changed periodically.
that is what it says but I think you could do the same thing by transfering the picture to the cloth and not sewing it in.
do I understand that the photos are regular photos (not photos transferred to cloth)?
