Preparing for Pansy Season

Martha Stewart Living, October 2003

For such delicate-looking flowers, pansies are actually quite hardy. Plant seedlings 4 to 6 inches apart in your garden this fall, and they'll be ready to bloom when spring arrives. Since pansies thrive in cold weather, they overwinter well. Give them a blanket of mulch, no more than two inches thick, applied after a hard freeze, to help them through the most frigid months.
