Paint and Pegboard

Organizing Good Things 2004

Painting the bare wood white makes a huge difference -- it defines an area. Pegboard organizes tools and brooms, while a metal cart serves as a mobile workbench. Adjustable shelves display an assortment of containers, including a painted wooden box that stores glue; glass jars contain small hardware. And the pan of sand on the floor catches oil drips from the car.

Tools and Materials
pegboard
pine 1-by-2s
wood screws
plastic anchors (optional)
screw gun or drill
3/4-inch wood screws and washers
paint
hooks and holders

Paint and Pegboard How-To
1. Pegboard is available in 2-by-4-foot, 4-by-8-foot, and 4-by-4-foot pieces. Buy as much as you need, cutting it, if necessary, to size. With pine 1-by-2s, build a perimeter frame of identical dimensions. Mount the frame by screwing it into the wall. (If you are mounting the frame on drywall, you will need to use plastic anchors in conjunction with screws.)

2. Using a screw gun, 3/4-inch wood screws, and appropriately sized washers, mount the pegboard on frame, aligning outer edges and spacing the screws at equal intervals (left). (If you do not have a screw gun, drill a pilot hole first, then insert the screws with a screwdriver.)

3. Paint the pegboard in a color to match the rest of the room, and add hooks and holders for hanging tools.

I am not certain that it is the exact color (I suspect that this is a Martha color) but I know of two colors that are very close: Antigua Sky by Benjamin Moore and Raindrop by Sherwin Williams. HTH!

BEFORE HIS DEATH, MY FATHER PUT PEG BOARD UP ON ONE SIDE OF A DOUBLE GARGE FOR ME, PAINTED IT WHITE; INSERTED THE HOOKS WITH CAULKING SO AS NOT TO SLIP AND THEN ARRANGED THE TOOLS VERY MAN-LIKE ACCORDING TO TYPE; EACH TOOL HAS A LABEL AND AN OUTLINE SO THAT AT A GLANCE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE OR SEE WHAT IS NOT PUT AWAY.

I have pegboard in my laundry room, painted a complimentary color. I love it. No more junk drawer! It all fits on the board and my husband can find things!

Pegboard is available in 1/8" and 1/4" thicknesses. Be sure to use the 1/4" for heavy duty uses such as in a garage or storage area. You can use the 1/8" in a craft area or behind your sewing machine table. Also, make sure you buy the correct size hooks for the thickness of pegboard you use.
