Heart Doilies How-To
1. Position a prefolded square paper napkin so that the closed corner faces you.
2. Fold right corner toward left corner and flatten, forming a triangle.
3. Fold left corner toward triangle's longest side and flatten, forming a narrower triangle.
4. Using scissors, cut a convex arc from triangle to create top of half a heart.
5. Cut off bottom of triangle from left to right to create lower heart half, leaving at least 1/4 inch intact on right edge. (Left side of triangle will be center of a heart.) Unfold.
6. Repeat with napkins in several colors, varying position of cuts to create doilies in different sizes.

RECYCLE!!! i reused the the part cut off at the bottom to make a paper flower bouquet to match the doilies!!

Oh my gosh, this is so cute! I practiced yesterday on a piece of white paper. This morning I dug into my stash of tissue paper left over from Christmas, cut some into 9" squares, and began making these hearts. After making them, they could be ironed gently. And how about laminating them to use over and over.
OkarchePeach's input was most helpful. Napkin w point down should have all folds no open edges. Top should have the open edges. That way you come out with all hearts intact in a circle. I was coming out with sets of two previously. Thank you.

Left handed or not you should still be able to follow the directions Debi. It tells you to fold from the right to the left and then from the left to the right. It shouldn't make a difference which hand is your supperior.
This is a cute idea but if you are left handed it seems to be made backwards to me !!!!!!!!! Maybe sometime you could give instructions from a left handers view.....

I guess I am used to folding and cutting, so the instructions seem fine to me! Just be patient with yourself. Try reading the words out loud as you slowly do each step. Look at the picture to see if your fold matches it before going on to the next step. .
If you use thin paper instead of napkins, you can also cut or punch lace-like designs into the hearts before unfolding - like you do for paper snowflakes.
Wow- fun project! I cut 3 rounds of hearts from 1 napkin, 8 little hearts by cutting a "heart window" out of the smallest heart before unfolding. Plus, my napkins are two-ply, so I can peel apart the layers to get twice as many (thin, translucent) doilies.

Ladies, you have to keep the fold at least a little in tact other wise you will get lots of pieces. No gluing or taping needed then :)

great project! At first I was a little unclear about the directions to fold but I followed Handbellringer's suggestion of looking at the napkin like a baseball diamond and got it one time. Thanks!

I love this idea!!! I'm a teacher and have come up with another variation that I plan to use in my classroom. You can also make these with coffee filters and markers. Decorate the filter with red and pink hearts (or even scribbles). Cut according to directions, then spritz with water. The water will cause the marker to bleed, creating a unique tie-dyed effect :) Decorate a handmade card or sandwich between layers of clear contact paper or laminate to make a suncatcher. Have fun!!!!

Try adding these notes to the original directions: 1-As if you were at home base of a baseball diamond. 2-Bring 1st base to 3rd base with the baselines lined up. 3-Bring the baselines to the long centerline. 4-Cut a rounded top, to look like a single dip ice cream cone. (Pretend you are cutting out a heart from a single fold paper.) 5- Cut a sliver (or a chunk) from the side that is NOT the last fold, making sure to leave at least 1/4 inch of the (multiple) folds near the top of your cone.
I WILL FINISH THE DIRECTIONS, THEN FROM THE BOTTOM, GO AT LEAST A 1/4 INCH UP AND CUT THE BOTTOM OF A HEART. KEEP THE FOLDED SIDE FACING YOU. REMEMBER WHEN YOU CUT YOU WILL BE CUTTING ON THE FOLDED SIDE FIRST, CUTTING TOWARDS THE OPEN ENDS.

I WILL TRY TO HELP: LAY NAPKIN WITH THE FOLD PART IN FRONT OF YOU, TAKE THE RIGHT POINT FOLD UP TO OPPOSIT POINT (WHICH SHOULD BE THE OPEN ENDS) THIS WILL FORM A TRIANGLE, NOW FOLD THE POINTS BACK OVER TO THE FOLD PART, FORMING A KIND OF CONE. WHEN YOU FOLD IT BACK YOU SHOULD HAVE WHAT LOOKS LIKE A CONE MAYBE? THE FOLD WILL NOT COVER THE TOP PART. NOW IF YOU TAKE THE SCISSORS AND CUT JUST THE TOP PART OF A HEART, ONLY THE ROUND PART, CUT THIS ON THE FOLD SIDE,FROM THE FOLD TO THE OPEN SIDE,
The directions are in the Feb. 2009 issue of MS Living. Look on page 51, under Good Things. There is a great picture at the bottom that shows you exactly where to cut. I found that step #5 should read: Cut off from the bottom point of the triangle, straight up the right edge, keeping the shape of the triangle,but leave 1/4" intact at the top of triangle. Good Luck!

I have had the same problem except I've used aleast a dozen napkins!!!!!!!! I've searched your web site link after link looking for a video for this. I've found videos for a bunch of other crafts so why not this one?? After all it was on todays show 01/27/2009. HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!

Very cute idea, it took me two try's, but once I re-read the directions I had a lighbulb moment. I made it harder for myself then it really is. My first mistake was I cut off the folds, which connect the hearts together. Pretty simple once you get the hang of it..Good luck to all!
con't pg 3 Geeeeezzzz and left side. 3 Repeat fold again right to left. Makes a cone shape wpoint at bottom. Both sides of cone have folds. 4 Top of cone is top of heart, draw two half circle for top of heart, cut. 5 Bottom of cone cut diagonal.

I had trouble keeping this under the prescribed 500 character limit so I will post two times: 1. I like to start with the n n n n n n big foldn n n n n n on the lower left, and the two smaller folds on the right.
2. This puts your first fold on the right.
3. Fold the triangle in half, putting your second fold on the left.
4. Cut the arc from the top of the triangle. (I turned mine over first. I am right handed and it was easier for me to visualize the heart if I cut from the n n n n n n center.n n n n n n )
The heart doily is not explained very well. It would have been nice to have some type of a drawing to go along with the explaination.
I tried it too, and I give up. I'm buying the magizine, because it's such a cute idea!
