It was a huge disaster and an enormous mess, and it took hours
I ended up just melting the crayons in a mini cupcake to make new crayons

@ Lucindalondon - waxed paper is usually in the grocery store with aluminum foil, plastic wraps, etc.

I used to do this craft with my mother way back in the 60's and again with my children when they were young. We especially liked making fall pictures using beautiful autumn leaves and red, orange and yellow crayons. It's an easy rainy day craft anytime of the year and a great way way to use all those broken crayons that languish in the bottom of the crayon box. The kids always loved the way the crayons melted and beautiful pictures appeared.

I know this is supposed to be a kid craft... but my kid is not even 2 yet, and I'm not waiting! So cute, will look great hanging in Little One's room!

I tried it with 5 of my children ages 8 - 16 & not one of them turned out properly. What started out as a nice little craft to do with my children ended 3+ hrs. later with crayon shavings EVERYWHERE, my ironing board cover ruined, crayon melted onto my iron & a huge mess to clean up, which would have been worth it if even one of the children's crafts had turned out remotely close to as nice as the picture shows. Not a kids craft at all. Thankfully I at least had the foresight to do it outside

So my waxed paper is brown so do I peal the paper away from the wax and just cut heats out of wax or I need white clear waxed paper and the wax stays between two sheets and I cut and use the hearts with paper either side of the wax

Has anyone who made these lovely. colorful hearts tell me, does the wax melt on very hot days? Thank you for your response.

A very cool project! I was looking for something to do with my daughter this weekend! She helped me pick out some new window treatments in Indianapolis for my apartment last time. This would be a great follow up project for us to do too!

FireGal, parchment paper would not stick together like the waxed paper does. And the colors would not show through.

These look absolutely beautiful when the sun shines through them, and they're easy and quick to make too. One thing I tried was re-ironing the hearts once I cut them out, and that took care of any peeling edges that the scissors made in the wax paper.

Another thing you can do with crayons is color plain white pillow cases with the cayons, place wax paper over the colored drawing and iron with very hot iron. The colors melt into the pillow case, [ be sure to place paper in-between the pillow case so that the drawing only melts on the top]. The crayon drawing on the pillow cases stand up to multiple washings with no bleeding onto other cothing items in the washer. We did this for 4-H projects and Girl Scout projects years ago.

Have I been living under a rock? I've never heard/seen this before and love it! I'm not a pink hearts type of guy, but I did need to obscure part of my French door because my neighbor can clearly see into my house. I didn't like all of the store bought stickers of humming birds or flowers, and I didn't want to totally block my view, so this worked out perfectly. I did aqua stars and it turned out so well, I've been searching my house for other places I can make some because it was fun!

I made these, probably over a decade ago when Martha first published it. It's a great idea and makes a really nice craft...but you better have loads of crayons on hand. You will be sharpening them till the cows come home.

super cute! super easy! make it even easier, place the thread between the wax sheets before ironing and it is ready to hang once cut.

We tied the hearts to a kid's size plastic hanger and then hung it on the back of the valence bracket

I used a stick that I painted and glittered.

Has anyone thought of a good object to attach the hearts to? I would rather not attach each one to the window individually and a hanger doesn't seem pretty enough. Any suggestions would be great!

I think you can use a paper bag instead of kraft paper.

What is a kraft paper? Can you please describe it? I would like to try to make one of these for my mother on valentines...

for storage, could you just put each heart between book pages { like several bookmarks in one book } and just have the strings out the top so that you could remember which book they are in for next valentines day?? :)

Didn't mean to post my other comment twice :( Depending on how big your decoration is, starlalmd, I'm going to try storing mine on either an old wrapping paper cardboard roll, wrapped around loosely so as not to mash the hearts, or attach to a hanger somehow and cover with a plastic bag and hang in a closet (sort of like dry cleaning).

Rather than using wasting good craft paper to cover the wax paper, I used squares cut out from used grocery bags. Grocery bag paper really absorbs the wax

This is a great rainy day craft I used to do as a child and then did with my children. It's a really nice fall craft too, add fall leaves with the crayon shavings between the wax paper, or at Christmas with glitter and white and blue crayon(make snowmen or snowflakes) . But really children like to do these at anytime with lots of colours (good way to use uo little bits of crayons!).

If anyone has a good way to store this item, without it getting tangled...without recovery- please let me know. These make good valentines too- we did single hearts and gave them to friends with a little suction cup to hang it by..

This is a great craft. To get the same look press the wax without steam, then press out firmly with a little blast of steam pushing the wax out and through the wax paper. It absorbs into the kraft paper, you can use paper towels to absorb too (careful it can get on your iron). If the heart starts to pull apart resteam and pull some of the wax out by pressing and absorbing excess into kraft paper or towel. If found pressing sfter it's cut really helps translucency.

This would make cute easter eggs done in pastels as well. Thanks for the inspiration!

I made two of these, one for my kitchen window and one for my bedroom window. They both turned out well. I never could get the all-over color I see in your demo, but the patterns I got were very pretty. I hung my hearts from a dowel and put that over my curtain rod. It was easier to transport the craft, but I had a lot of untangling of strings to do once I got it where I wanted it.

My 4 children and I are going to try this craft tomorrow for our home-school group Valentine party. Seems simple enough, and Lord knows, with 4 children under age 8, I've got plenty of crayons lying around! LOL! And to the previous contributor, sherryjackson, I don't know what kind of crayons you used, but maybe Crayola would work best...just a thought. ( :

I work as a Livestyle Director (activities director) for an assisted living home and I can't wait to try this craft and all of the others with the residents! I'll let you know how they like making them.

My son and I made these to put in our windows. He had a great time doing it and they look great. I was thinking to use 2 put together with a brad and a piece of paper inside to make a unique valentine card.

I found that if you use a citrus grater to shred the crayon, you get much better coverage than the pencil sharpener. When I was using the pencil sharpener, I would use two crayons but and never really liked my results. The tiny shreds from the citrus grater made for much better coverage and I liked the result way better.

Sheesh! Everything old is new again! We did this in my Vacation Bible School in about 1960! Cut out leaves for Fall! You can use it anytime! So simple but effective!

My 3 year-old and I made these with great success. He enjoyed tracing the hearts out on the wax paper using cookie cutters. Careful not to use too many crayon shavings or the hearts will crack.

I did this for my family last year and they all still have them hanging in their houses. Put between wax paper and then place between brown bag and keep on checking. Keep watching or color will get muddy.

I did this with my 8 and 3 year olds, they turned out beautifully! We even did some in the colors of the kid's rooms to hang in their windows. Great project for a cold day!

I tried this and it didn't work. The wax only stuck to one side of the paper and when I cut out the hearts, it crumbled. I don't know whether the hearts were supposed to be part of the paper or hold on their own, but either way, this project is better in theory.

This is a very cute idea, so easy that even a child can help with some of the steps involved. I've done a similar thing with fall leaves. While the colored leaves are still supple, I place them on a piece of waxed paper and shaved crayons. I use two pieces of waxed paper to create a picture and then frame it with construction paper before hanging at the window.
