Custom Knitting Needles

  • Wooden dowels (1/8 to 1/2 inch in diameter)
  • Small saw
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Fine-gauge sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • Fast-drying acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Butcher's wax
  • Glue
  • Buttons
  • Epoxy

  1. Step 1

These homemade needles begin as wooden dowels 1/8 to 1/2 inch in diameter. Use a small saw to customize the length of each pair -- anywhere from 8 to 16 inches.

  2. Step 2

Put a point on one end of each dowel with a pencil sharpener; smooth wood's surface with fine-gauge sandpaper.Wipe clean with a tack cloth and brush on 2 to 3 coats of fast-drying acrylic paint. Seal with a final coat of butcher's wax to ensure that yarn moves freely along the dowel.

  3. Step 3

Glue a button in a contrasting color to the flat end of the painted dowel with a dot of epoxy. Include a small skein of wool with your gift.

I am a Knitting and Crochet adict. I have taught many "How to" classes. I love this project. I am going to take my needle sizer with me the next time I go shopping. I am going to purchase the correct size dowels and make these. I am going to make gift packs with the needls, a pattern and yarn. I'll give them to the people on my Christmas list and those I teach.

My son-in-law is a fine woodworker, but he never thought of making my daughter knitting needles. What a wonderful idea!!!!! I printed out the instructions for him....Really enjoyed the knitting/crochet show on 3/23/09.
Thank you Martha for always having such interesting and instructive programs.
Looking forward to your craft book on the needle arts.
