I keep thinking about this idea and would love to try it, but here's the thing I'm worried about. Wouldn't the water from you watering the plants end up washing off/making a mess of all the chalk? I believe even the long lasting stuff can get washed off with water (instead of just with a brush). So unless you're perfect with your watering and never spill a drop, how does this not make a big chalky mess?

I found that if I didn't first coat the inside of the pot with terra cotta sealer then the chaulkboard paint came off very quickly due to the moisture in the dirt inside. It "pushes" the paint right off. Love this idea.

Adorable idea - have done this - in is obviously for INDOOR or porch plants - great for teachers to know whose plant is whose

Wouldn't the name of the plant and it's needs just wash off in the first rain storm? Duh!

I did this the last time around and I love the look. Even when I don't write anything on the pots, the pots look really good on my deck, and it gives uniformity to all the different pots I have. I love being able to write on them then re-write, when something I planted didn't make it (I'm afraid I have a brown thumb).

I do this on a large pot and let my children plant different flowers in sections and keep track of them by writing the names of the plants around the edge. It really sparks learning in the summer.

if you did this as a grouping, it would make a great bridal shower gift or housewarming gift. i really like this one

I've done this and I love it! It helps me keep my herbs straight because I have a hard time telling them apart. The chalkboard paint also comes in a spray paint version, which I found a bit easier to handle.

I plan to make little pots for my grandchildren. Love the idea of putting chalk, eraser in the same pot! Now, Martha, how to secure the chalk and eraser inside?

I want to put a series of colourful plants in these and label them going up the 3 stairs to my doorstep: "Welcome" "to our" and "Home" . . .

I'm not the greatest gardener in the world but I think this would be great for my herbs on the window sill. It will also be great containers for my neice's desk and put her pens, pencils, etc. in different size pots. Love it!!! Heather

Wow, I love this idea. I have tons of pottery pots and I work in a greenhouse, so this is going to be a terrific idea for some of the plantings we do. I can't wait!!!

This is such a good idea. I decided to do "Welcome" to the neighborhood pots for my new neighbors.

I made these as party favors for my daughter's 11th birthday. The chalkboard was painted as a square on the front (not around the top). I painted the rest in bright spring colors and around the top I painted "friendship blooms". We wrote each girls name on the chalkboard and included a small pack of chalk, potting soil and a packet of seeds. Finally a useful party favor!! Thanks Martha!!

Great idea!

Such a good idea. I am going to make some and use them for gifts. Our churchs ladies group provides meals for people in need such as someone who just had a baby, someone who has just had surgery...just a couple examples. And to give them a plant in one of these and personalize it would be great.

I believe the stripe remains but the chalked comments can be removed with water. Is that correct?

This is a creative idea, keep up the good job. I know I can always get creative ideas from Martha Stewart.

I am doing some of these with the herbs for my mom for mother's day. I think she will like them and she can then remember what the herbs are and with the guide for cooking with herbs that I am including with her gift, it will be a hit!!
