Restore a Worn Tabletop

Revitalize a scruffy tabletop by adding a leather surface. Putty and sand any ridges or bumps in the table; the leather should hide pits and scratches.

Measure table; mark dimensions on underside of leather. With a utility knife, cut leather piece, leaving border to cover sides, then cut out a notch in each corner.

Spread a thin layer of polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesive across tabletop. Lay out leather, right side up; match notches with corners. Smooth it out, pushing bubbles toward edges while keeping corners aligned.

Once top is flat, spread adhesive on the four sides, and press leather into place. After the adhesive has dried, trim excess leather. Finish table with upholstery tacks spaced evenly on the sides.
