Martha Stewart Living, March 1995
Don't weep over chopped onions. If you cut them near an open flame, the gaseous sulfur compounds they release into the air will burn off before they can irritate your eyes. A gas burner works best, but if your stove is electric, try lighting a votive candle near your chopping board instead.

I tried this today using a candle. I know it was close enough because I could feel the heat...I believe it made it much worse for me! Instead of the essential oils burning away, I think the heat acted like a catalyst to make the molecules move rapidly and increase their tear producing results. :C
This is such a great thing. I now keep a candle in my kitchen at all times and I call it my Martha candle. I don't know what I'd do without it.
Thanks Martha!
