Woolen Mittens

The Martha Stewart Show, December 2006

These adorable mittens made from an old sweater are sure to make an extra-special holiday gift.

Tools and Materials
Felted sweater
Pattern paper
Needle and thread

Felting How-To
1. Before starting these mittens you will need to felt your sweater. Simply wash and dry a sweater-using hot water in your washing machine, and a hot dryer setting to dry. The soap, water, and heat will cause the fibers to felt. You may need to repeat this process a few times since every sweater is different.

2. Test your sweater for felting by snipping the edge. It should not fray. If it does, wash and dry again.

Mitten How-To
1. Place your hand on the pattern paper and trace around.

2. Add 1/2-inch seam allowance around the pattern. Cut out your mitten shapes from the paper. Place your pattern on the sweater, with the wrist at the bottom edge of the sweater.

3. Stitch edge with 1/4-inch seam allowance.

4. Turn mittens right side out and steam with an iron to finish.

I am in my 60's and my Grandmother used this same method of making our mittens. I guess she was a few decades ahead of her time. Who knew?

this looks like such a cute idea - i have a lot of sweaters that have been accidentally washed and dried and now they won't be a total waste :)

I love the hat too. Where can I get the pattern and the complete instructions as I have never felted.

I felted two woll sweaters that I bought in 'Value Village' [a second hand place.] I cut out four mitten shapes , two from each sweater and made double thickness mittens. black and gold coloured. you could reverse them if you wanted because I hid all the seams and added a braid trim around the cuffs. So easy , it took no time at all.

I would like to get the hat pattern featured in this segment. Please let me know where I can get it.

For a sweater to felt like shown it needs to be 100% wool.

Does the sweater have to be wool? Will an acryluc sweater need 'felting' in the same manner?
