Embellished Flowerpots

Martha Stewart Living, June 2006

With a little imagination and basic materials, a flowerpot can be just as eye-catching as what it holds. Here, you'll find ideas for transforming plain containers. These include adding seashell appliques and covering the exterior with fabric or bits of tree bark. Even a coat of vibrant paint can make a world of difference.

Any houseplant or bouquet would sit pretty in one of our creations. (Use a pot liner inside vessels that have been finished with glue or tape, and remove the liner for watering.) Also consider filling them with sewing-room or office supplies or a heaping collection of shells or sea glass. Terra-cotta and ceramic pots are inexpensive and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Best of all, once you begin experimenting with them, new ideas for adorning and using the pieces are sure to sprout.
