Prettiest Fall Makeup

Blueprint, September/October 2007

Applying the same ol' cosmetics the same ol' way every day? Top makeup artists show you how to pull off their favorite looks from the fall runways -- ultraflattering combinations that any woman (yes, you) can wear.

Look No. 1: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Jo Strettell, a Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist for Sephora, favors the pink-dusted cheeks spotted on models at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show. "I simply love how sweet this look is," she says. Clean up your complexion with tinted moisturizer (see her product picks, below). Then use a big brush to sweep a petal-pink blush across cheeks. Apply a soft cream shadow on lids (skipping mascara and liner) and a nude color to lips.

Look No. 2: Seeing Navy
At the Lela Rose show, eyelids were lined in a beautiful blue shadow and combined with illuminated skin and raspberry-coated lips. Tina Turnbow, a New York City makeup artist for beauty.com, loves the recipe. And no wonder: She created it. "I wanted to make an everyday look for women that's feminine, pretty, and polished," she says.

Turnbow skipped foundation and just used a translucent powder with an ever-so-subtle shimmer to brighten the model's skin. To line eyes with precision, she suggests wetting a firm, pointy brush before dipping it into a pot of navy eye shadow. Sweep the brush along the top lash line, slightly winging it at the outside corner for a hint of a cat-eye effect. Apply two coats of black mascara to lashes and a deep-pink gloss to lips to give them sweetness with an edge.

Look No. 3: A Bold Statement
The dramatic, matte red lips seen at the Gucci show were a standout for Chrisanne Davis, a makeup artist in New York City. "A red mouth feels so fresh and new," she says. "It's the return of classic glamour." Although there are many ways to personalize it -- like switching the hue -- always balance strong lip color with mascara and little else.

To get this look, brush a sheer face powder over skin to even out the tone. If you use blush at all, go light (anything else "looks too Ringling Brothers," Davis says). Then layer on mascara and line the rims of lower lashes with pale blue pencil. It brightens the eyes and looks softer than using a white pencil, she explains. Finally, apply a deep-red matte lip color. But skip the lip liner, Davis says. "It will make this modern face appear old-fashioned and done."

Look No. 4: It's Easy Being Green
Smoky eyes have always been fashion-show staples. But when shimmery green shadows were used on models for Oscar de la Renta in lieu of the usual charcoal hues, Terri Apanasewicz, a Los Angeles makeup artist and founder of p3beauty.com, saw a fresh, more wearable combination. It's a softer version of a strong look, she says.

Use a green shadow quad that has all the colors you'll need in one compact, Apanasewicz recommends. Sweep the deepest green over lids. Next, dust a lighter green or gold shadow just below the brow, and line the upper and lower lash lines with a dark green liner. Brighten inside corners of eyes with a touch of gold. Then brush any fallen shadow off cheeks, and smooth on tinted moisturizer. Top cheeks with a dusty-rose blush and lips with a sheer pink gloss.
