Spring Makeup Tips

If you find it challenging to apply your makeup so that it goes on smoothly, looks natural, and makes you face radiate, it might not be your makeup, but the condition of your skin. Follow these simple steps from Martha's makeup artist Mary Curran to achieve flawless makeup application in just a few simple steps.

Daily Night Regiment
Step 1
Cleanse at night to remove oil and dirt that has built up during the day. Many people skip the evening, but it's essential to remove the buildup of oil and dirt that accumulate throughout the day. Most cleansers come in two forms: normal-to-dry and normal-to-oily. Be sure to purchase the one that best meets your skin condition. If you have problem skin you should consult your dermatologist.

Step 2

Apply your moisturizer. Mary recommends using Yonka Mask for an extra boost of moisture before special events, to give your skin added moisture and an extra glow. If your skin doesn't need extra moisturizing, just use a moisturizer formulated for your skin type.

Step 3

Apply Phyto Contour to you skin to drain the puffiness and help reduce the redness under your eyes. Remember to get enough sleep and drink plenty of water.

Daily Morning Regiments

Step 1

Start by using a quality facial cleanser.

Step 2
Apply toner. On the show, Mary used a light mist of the Yonka lotion all over the face and neck -- patting it in lightly with fingertips. This adds additional moisture to the skin's surface prior to applying your foundation.

Step 3

Apply a light layer of facial moisturizer to your skin with a sponge and your fingertips. On the show, Mary used Yonka Pamplemousse, which protects and brightens the skin's surface -- it contains grapefruit and essential oils. Be sure to choose a moisturizer that is specifically designed for your skin type.

Step 4
Apply a quality foundation. Make sure you have the correct shade -- blend a little bit on the side of your hand to get a very close match. And make sure you do this in a well-lit area so you get a true picture. Or get a person at a makeup counter to advise you. Don't buy online unless you've tried the product before.

Brushes 101

  • If you're a beginner, brushes with synthetic material are a good choice because they're softer and don't apply as intense a color. They're also good for layering. The natural material is for the slightly more advanced and intense color application.
  • Shu Uemura brushes are hand stacked in place and come in different shapes and sizes. Natural brushes, which Mary recommends, come in squirrel, badger, and pony. Squirrel is soft and badger is more firm.
  • Be sure to care for your brushes: Rinse with warm water and lightly run over a mild fragrance-free soap going in a downward motion, and lay flat to dry. Standing the brushes upright allows water to accumulate by the glue, loosening the bristles.

Best Way to Cover Under-Eye Circles
Blending your foundation with concealer to get lighter coverage in the under-eye area is an easy trick to create a smooth under-eye area.

I hate to be so picky...but a REGIMENT is a unit of troops in the military. A systematic procedure is a REGIMEN. On the other hand, a REGIME is a government in power...but that's a whole different thing.
